So when SC is enabled, what radio does the TV connect to? 2.4 or 5Ghz?

Isn't this supposed to be done AUTOMATICALLY by the DIR890L?   I had everything set to AUTOMATIC so I have no idea.

The point is:  SC for me has left the station.   I am now 36 hours into 3-separate WIFI nodes, and all works just fine (so far).  Streamed 3 hours of movies/videos earlier today and not one even little hick-up.

It does. You can see what the TV is connected to under Devices, look at the TV icon an it will say what it's connected too.

I have SC off, and I am unable to find "Devices" anywhere.  For example, when I click on the Pencil icon next to one of my phones, it gives me the IP address and nothing else.  Am I missing something?

Also, here is more logic to consider:

If SC is ON, and everything is set to AUTO and for some reason the "Smart" technology of DIR-890L puts my TV on 2.4Ghz, instead of 5Ghz, and additionally on the "wrong" channel -- why then when I manually split the router into 3 different bands (2.4, 5 & 5) (by turning SC off), and each of them are still set to AUTO and none of them are having issues (so far).  All I have done is limited my smartphones / laptop / WiFi printer to the 2.4Ghz and told my TV's to use the 5Ghz bandwidth.

I would think that if there is something physically wrong with my 2.4GHz channel, it would had shown up by now (running for 54 hours with no problems).

Another two cents worth from me...

What I was thinking about the TV and SC. Not sure why SC is doing that.
What browser are you using?
Try Opera or FF?

Honestly, I think you need to contact D-Link support and talk to them about your unit and ask for an RMA. There's too much going on with your unit and shouldn't be happening. I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. Reference this thread if needed. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.
Let us know how it goes please.

Can you try Opera or FF to see if you notice the same issues as you do with IE?

When you click on the pencil and it only displays one item? Should see several rows of options here.

Sorry for not responding earlier.  This is what I see

Name (unknown)
Vendor Samsung
MAC Adress:  the numbers...
IP Address: the numbers
Reserve IP (Disabled)
Parental Control (Disabled)

There is nothing about which channel (on the 5Ghz bandwidth) the device is connected to.

So that information is displaying correct in any browser right?

To see what wireless devices are connected to what frequency, look on the devices icon under Clients and on each icon, it should display either 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz-1 or -2.
