QoS on Guest Network
« on: September 05, 2014, 10:25:20 PM »

Hi,

Can I apply QoS to Guest Networks? I have configured my router as follows:

DHCP Configuration:
192.168.0.170-200
I have fixed a static IP for all my devices on the router in the 192.168.0.2-10 range.

QoS configuration:
Strict Priority,
192.168.0.2-10 HIGHEST
192.168.0.170-200 NORMAL

Will this configuration extend to guest network devices, with dynamically allocated IP? I mean the networks are isolated, but the guest devices are getting IP from the DHCP pool as well, so I think it may be possible.

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

If you have Guest Zone set up, I don't think QoS applies to the Guest Zone. Now if you have guest devices set up with in the main DHCP server on the WLAN and LAN side, as you have it described here. Then yes, that configuration should work with QoS.

Hi,

Thanks for replying.

Hardware Version : A1
Firmware Version : 1.10WW
I am in India (South East Asia).

I am running two 2.4 GHz networks. One is my main network, and the other is the guest network (under Advanced > Guest Zone). I keep all my personal devices on my main network. I have disabled security on all servers on my laptop (DLNA, SMB, Apache, MySQL). I keep all my documents and media files on my laptop and stream them when I need to, and hence I refrain from sharing this network.

I share my connection with a multiple devices on the Guest Network (2 devices on the main network). I did verify that the guest devices get IP addresses from the main DHCP list (they show up in the Status tab). I was hoping I could extend QoS to that zone.

QoS only applies to devices out going to the WAN port from the LAN side. If your trying to make QoS work on a LAN to LAN configuration, that won't work.

No, sure. I am talking about the WLAN guest bandwidth to WAN (all guest devices are LAN isolated, I believe). Can QoS apply to that? I googled a lot but I haven't found any information specifically on this issue.

If the gust devices are set up in a specific IP address range with in the main DHCP IP address pool, then yes. If the Guest devices are connecting to the actual Guest Zone feature, then I don't think so as this uses a different IP address pool.

Well, I did some more research and it appears that MAC filtering, Port Forwarding, DHCP, QoS are applied to all devices in the 192.168.0.0/24 subnet. It is only that the 850L won't route packets from any device in the Guest Zone to any other device except WAN.

I presume this would be expected behavior.
