Total Disk Space raid5
« on: September 12, 2013, 09:17:01 AM »

Hey Guys,

Ive searched the form in every way possible and went through 20 of the 31 pages on the forms.  I had one of my drives fail in my 343 which I have replaced. The NAS recognized the new disk right away and had no issues formatting it. Set up I currently have is 4 X 2TB drives set to raid 5.  I cant recall what the total usable disk size should be replaced.  This is what I see when I log into the device:

Total Hard Drive Capacity:     5900656 MB
Used Space:     3134071 MB
Unused Space:     2766585 MB

Am I missing anything?

Sorry for the newb question and appreciate any feed back you are able to give.

Thanks

Your numbers look correct. The raw storage space for 4x2 TB HDDs is approximately 8 TB. RAID-5 needs approximately 25% of the available space for redundancy, which makes recovery from a dead HDD possible.

8TB * 0.25 = 6TB = 6,000,000 MB = ~5,900,656 MB

Glad to help!

If you're into math, here's a more detailed explanation I previously posted in the ShareCenter FAQ board:

The ShareCenter FAQ board is also a good resource for information pertaining to your ShareCenter.
