Cannot connect to Virgin Mobile Overdrive Pro MiFi
« on: December 03, 2013, 11:17:02 AM »

I've gotten my DIR-506L to successfully connect to 5 or so different wifi networks, including my home connection, an open guest network at work, two different hotels (that had a "terms of agreement" login page), and a Verizon MiFi.  However I cannot get it to connect to my Virgin Mobile Overdrive Pro MiFi.  I haven't had issues connecting anything else with this MiFi - laptops, iPads, and iPhones all connect successfully.  I'm fairly certain there is a setting on this MiFi that is preventing the DIR-506L from connecting to it and that it's not an issue with the 506L.  After some brief googling, it seems like it has something to do with the DIR-506L trying to act as a router itself - some of the results reference this MiFi and issues with NAT settings, but were related to connecting other devices, like game consoles.

I first called D-Link and we tried several different troubleshooting steps that didn't work, and since I don't have any issues connecting to other wifi networks, we concluded that the issue was with the MiFi and to call technical support for the MiFi.  I called them, and they seem pretty clueless as to what I'm trying to do, but they said they've escalated the issue and will call me back.

The MiFi settings that I can configure are:
(WiFi tab)
-Wi-Fi channel
-RTS Threshold (default is 2347)
-Fragmentation Threshold (default is 2346)
-WMM Support (default is enabled)
-Security type - WPA2-Personal AES or WPA/WPA2 Personal (default is WPA2-Personal AES)
(Router tab - default for all is disabled)
-Port forwarding
-Port triggering
-DMZ
-UPnP
-SPI

Anyone have any clues as to what is keeping the DIR-506L from connecting to the MiFi, and any possible troubleshooting tips?  Thanks in advance for any help.

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Is this Verizon Overdrive Pro MiFi configurable for open connections? No security? If it is, I would try to connect the 506L to the Pro as a temporary test with open security to see if it will connect. There maybe a configuration issue or compatibility issue between these two devices.

The hardware version is A2.
The pre-loaded firmware was 2.11, but I upgraded it to 2.13 (tried before and after).
I'm in the U.S. (North Texas)

To clarify, it's a Virgin Mobile Overdrive Pro 3G/4G Hotspot (VM MiFi) that I'm trying to connect to.  It uses Sprint's 3G and 4G WiMax networks.  My dad has a Verizon Wireless Jetpack MHS291L 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot that I was successfully able to connect to.

I set security for the VM MiFi to "none" and changed the DIR-506L to different network (which connected successfully), then back to the VM MiFi with no security, and it still will not connect.  I agree that there may be a compatibility issue, but it's just weird that these two devices work with all others correctly, but will not connect to each other.

Ya, and with out any more experience with that environment, not sure what else try. Are you trying bridge or extend the Overdrive Mi Fi using the 506L? I wonder if the DAP-1320 would work better...Not sure if Verizon would be of any help. You might post in a Verizon forum and see if there could be any info  there. I presume this kind of set up and platform is a limited thing so may not be  a lot of users with the same thing.

You're right; there's no documentation for this because it's probably a very unique setup.  I'm trying to use the wi-fi hotspot mode of the DIR-506L; I'm not sure if that's setting up a bridge or not.  There are two main reasons I'm doing it: first, I'm trying to use the USB port of the DIR-506L to share a USB hard drive full of movies with an iPad so our daughter can watch movies when we aren't home (mainly road trips).  The other reason is to increase the number of connections to the MiFi - the max is 5.  That could have something to do with why it won't work - they don't want any connections to be re-routed or shared, which makes sense.  Other MiFi devices seem to work, but they're on different carriers.  It's not that I really need more than 5 simultaneous connections, but I'd have to disconnect device 5 to connect device 6, and that's a pain to do manually.

I also like the DIR-506L specifically because it has the rechargeable battery.  When using in the car, it doesn't turn off when we turn the car off.  The car has an AC outlet, so we could use a AC-powered device, but it would turn off when the engine is turned off, and we wouldn't have quite as much portability.

Virgin Mobile is by FAR the cheapest solution for mobile internet for me right now, so I don't really want to switch just because of this.  For now, devices that connect to the DIR-506L just don't have internet access.

I'm curious to see what Virgin Mobile's tech support ends up saying.  I asked if there was an event log that I could provide.  The DIR-506L doesn't want to connect at ALL, so I don't know if that would help or not.
