Router Hangs Frequently
« on: December 23, 2015, 07:57:58 PM »

I've had a DIR-880L for quite some time now (1+ year) and I'd say for the past little while it has been quite unstable requiring a power cycle to get it going again.
I am running the latest stock firmware (1.05WW) and the trigger seems to be high data transfer that causes this router to hang (unresponsive to pings and connecting to the router via IP).

Basically if I am moving a lot of data to my NAS or sometimes even downloading at a high rate (I have a 250Mbps connection) the router will all of a sudden stop working and requires a power cycle.

This is quite frustrating and not the first time I've had issues with DLink so I'm really starting to be discouraged by the quality of DLink wireless products.

Can anyone advise what I can do to possibly rectify this issue?  Is it an impending complete hardware failure, or is it something else?

Thanks.

Link>Welcome!

  • What region are you located?
  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?
  Link> >FW Update Process
  • Was the router working before any firmware updates?
  • Check cable between Modem and Router and LAN Devices, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

If your doing large file xfers a lot, I would highly recommend getting a external Gb LAN switch installed and place the switch after the router and connect the PC(s) and NAS to the switch. This will off load the large file bandwidth xfers and eliminate un-necessary router processing.

I'm in North America.
Ya, I know I've done a factory reset and setup the device all over again, just not sure at which firmware I may have done this.

I guess I'll do a reset now and see if it helps in any way.

I don't do a lot of big transfers, and by big, I'm talking maybe a 10GB file, which really isn't all that big, if the router is choking on that then I'd say it's a pretty weak router!

I will see if it keeps doing this, but if it does, I'll likely switch to another brand as I never had these types of issues using a certain blue and black router brand back in the day.

So this didn't happen before doing an update?
Would be interesting to see if reverting back to a older version to see if it happens.

What Mfr PC, OS version and Mfr and model NAS do you have?
So your doing 10Gb files? Are these single 10Gb files or multiple files equalling 10Gb?

Maybe I can help test this with you.

Well, I can tell you this, the Blue and Black company you reference isn't the same as in olden days since they were sold FYI.
Also know that doing any xfers thru any Mfr router will ot have as good performance as if you nstalled a Gb swtich and connected the PC and NAS to the switch.

Well I don't recall what triggered this, but it definitely didn't happen before, whether this was caused by an update or some hardware failure, I'm not sure.

I have a custom built PC, i7-2600k @ 4.5GHz watercooled w/16GB RAM, Samsung 850 pro, etc, this machine is more than powerful for the task at hand. :)
The NAS is a WD My Cloud 4TB gigabit.

Ya, sadly it's not the same company, which is why I won't be going with their routers either for my next unit.
I guess I'll see if I have a gigabit switch laying around, I know I have a spare switch, just forget what it is.

Well lets see if I can reproduce this.
Let me know if your xfering a single file or multiples of 10Gb. I have a NAS that stores 10-30Gb files so I can do some testing with my 880L.

There are some known issues which I've made D-Link aware of and hope should be fixed after the holidays sometime. Probably next year.  ::)

Ya if you can connect a switch and test, let us know the results.

Single files that are ~10GB, not multiples, so it allows the router to pick up steam during the process.

Ok, I think I have some single .mkv files on the NAS that are 15-20Gb. I"ll have a look and bring out the 880L and run some tests. I"d like to see if this is a problem and if so, get it to D-Link for review. I'm wondering if maybe the router is heating up during this process and stopping due to heat.

How is your router place? open area well ventilated? Or otherwise?

Here is the space, I think this should be sufficient for proper cooling.

I recommend moving either that speaker or the router away from each other. Magnets and magnetic fields are not good for wifi signals. Is that a modem only modem?

They are computer speakers so I would believe they are shielded and also my issue is wired so doubt the speaker would be the cause.

It's a router and modem, but it is setup as a bridge.

Ok. Well there is still some magnetic fields with even shielded speakers. Comes from the front thought limited.  ::)

Anyways, I'll have a go at this and see.
You don't remember what FW version you had on it before going to v1.05 do you>?

One test to try if you want and have time, disable both wifi radios and the run the xfer test. Still happens?

In terms of firmware I checked often so likely whatever was released before 1.05. I can temp disable Wi-Fi and see if it helps. The only thing is this issue isn't 100% repeatable, but it happens enough to be annoying.

Ok.

Let me ask this, when you start the 10gb xfer, how soon does the xfer stop and you notice the router is hung up?
