Title: 1.20 Beta Firmware Feedback Thread
Post by: Reinvented on May 01, 2009, 06:15:36 PM
I've just loaded this on, and so far so good.

You cannot however downgrade, and you CANNOT use your old configuration from either 1.16 FW or 1.15.  It's best to start from scratch anyway.

Again, it's a beta firmware, and it seems good so far.  They've added the Advanced DNS service, which is currently on the DIR-655, and the CATCHPA authentication to login to the router.  I disabled both however.

Just to note, BEFORE and AFTER flashing, you SHOULD clear the NVRAM by doing a 90 second reset, in which you hold down the reset button.  After the first 30 seconds, remove power, and keep it out.  Another 30 seconds should pass, and you should plug the router back in.  And continue holding the reset without letting go for the last 30 seconds.

DO NOT under ANY circumstances flash over wireless, as there is a chance you can brick your router due to corrupted firmware and dropped packets through the radio waves.

AND!  Last but not least, for those of you who use Shareport, PLEASE reinstall the software to regain function of your NAS devices, etc.

I have so far tested my games associated with Blizzard Entertainment..and it seems okay.  Still a few spikes, but it seems better.

Glad to see that. But after following the last beta release with the dir-655, I’m going to wait on this one. If it goes anything like the dir-655 beta release a final version should be out in a few. Also I’m guessing the latest’s to shareport will follow it.

This is kinda disturbing...

Haven't seen so many errors before ever.  Never EVER 24 on LAN.   1.15 it never went past 5. And the router has ONLY been up for 14 hours.

Secondly, I am going to assume that the firmware version says "1.20NA" for North America, since there are other countries that use it?  Am I correct in this assumption?

And they should really rename QoS Engine to GameFuel ;)

LAN Statistics

Normally it'll over around 5, and never go higher than that.  Is there a reason the LAN errors are happening?

Overall though, seems good and stable so far.

Something wrong with your measured uplink speed for gamefuel.

I have a 2MB upload.

The gamefuel measured it at something really high and then the last one was 84433 kbps  which would be 84MB upload.

I wouldn't do the automatic, because if you have an ISP which offers like a temporary boost (Comcast comes to mind), then it'll go really high, and then drop off.  I would select it manually for best performance.

I always do. Plus if your doing QOS correctly then you need to only be doing about 85% of you max upload.

My point of the post was not to try to use automatic but rather to tell Dlink that it was broken.  It's always on by default of a new install so people are just going to leave it like that.  Even with ISP's boosts it's not going to be 80 meg off.

I just updated my firmware to 1.20 B12 and found a couple of things which I do not like.

1) The Login Captcha - When you refresh the image, this automatically clears the password field.

 - Please fix so the password field does not get cleared EXCEPT for a failed login.

I find that the Captcha used here presents images for which the characters can not be made out by us Humans.

2) Advanced DNS Service - Please allow users to select the DNS Service we would like to use

 - I prefer to use OpenDNS for my DNS service and I do have an account with them as this service actively blocks Conflicker and allows you to block domains by category and by domain.

I disabled Advanced DNS just so I could enter the OpenDNS settings. Matter of fact, I had saved my configuration settings then used the file to restore my settings as per the instructions, yet the Advanced DNS was enabled by default, preventing my saved setting from restoring the OpenDNS entries.

Leave the Advanced DNS settings Disabled and let the user decide if they want to use it.

Does this firmware still require wireless to be enbled in order to make changes?  Also does upnp work now?

I used Automatic also.  Mine measured correctly at 1034...which is 10 more than what I SHOULD be getting.  My line from TWC is rated for 10/1.

@Dragonslore: I was able to read the CATCHPA correctly when first logging into the router.

Try refreshing the Captcha a few times and you'll see there are some you'll have trouble with and others you won't.

Some of the characters you can tell what they are with no problem, but other characters can be difficult to figure out what with the way the Captcha presents them.

I've had a few which I thought I had entered correctly only to have a message basically tell me to try again.

Plus I notice that there is no option to configure the captcha other than to disable/enable it.

So I just totally disabled the Captcha on my router after having too many problems with it.

Well I went ahead and flashed to this new fw and so far it seems to be working ok.  I just reentered all of my information from scratch then resaved the file.  I tried loading a saved file but it started acting up so I had to clear it via hard reset and do it manually which works fine.

Not really a question if the f/w will work. It's pretty much the same thing both the dir-655 and dir-825 got a couple weeks ago. They all pretty much have the same hardware. I would like to see if the problems that dgl-4500 users stated in the past have been addressed with this release.

Yeah not sure what the deal is then.  I hard reset.  Reflashed and still the same issue.  Weird.

Anybody know what the deal is with the non downgradable 'feature'?  I can't see any reason why the firmware shouldnt be downgradable except for a choice by D-Link.  Why not let us try it and go back if it creates a new issue for your installation?  What if it doesn't work for you and your then stuck with it?  Seems unneccessary.

Well, i'll spell this out for you...it is a BETA firmware.  You are NOT obligated to use this.  You do so at your own discretion.  If you want to be able to downgrade, then simply do not use this firmware.  VERY simple...

Normally reasons for no downgrades is that it usually fixes problems, and keeps the vulnerabilities away that existed in previous firmware.  I for one would not want to be able to downgrade back to those problems.  But again, some of you live by the rule "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" - which by all means is great.

AS for some of the issues...CAPTCHA is still readable...however, I think having it disabled from the get-go is better. I was however able to read it easily, and if in fact that there IS a failed login attempt (because the CAPTCHA not being correct IS considered a failed attempt), it SHOULD reset both the password field and the CAPTCHA field.

To address the QoS/GameFuel thing...just set it manually.  Automatic can screw up.  It's not precise.  Still read at 1034/1052/1018 for me.  I'm going to guess that you have some kind of "boost" on your upload, which can cause the results to spike VERY high like that.

And @Anon: The 4500 isn't even remotely like the DIR-655.  If anything, it's more like the 825.

And last but not least: I read in the DIR-655 section that OpenDNS provides the Advanced DNS services for D-Link.  The only downside is, there is no "dashboard" type feature to control what comes in, etc.

Hope some of this information helps you all!

Again, thank you for your feedback in this thread!

Thanks for your insight Reinvented, your posts in this forum are appreciated.  However regarding your 'not downgradeable' theory, I understand that its BETA and use at your own risk.  However I don't see what that has to do with disallowing a downgrade.  For example, with all my Nvidia and ATI graphics cards I am able to try BETA software at will and if it isn't quite ready for prime time to downgrade to the previous WHQL version.

My intent for asking the question was to find out if their is a technical (hardware) reason you can't downgrade or if it is purely a choice by D-Link.  I can't think of a technical reason but if their is one I would really like to know what it is.  If it is a choice by D-Link well I guess its their choice to make.  Thanks.

...Oh, really?

http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=2497.0

I tried both the dir-655 and dgl-4500 with both performing pretty much the same.

On the issue of not being able to downgrade, it seems to be on the people who makes the chips for dlink. It does seem strange to make a beta available to the public they can’t downgrade from. One guess I have is since a version of this beta has already been released on 3 other similar routers (2 still in beta), a final release is probably due soon.

Well, at least they’re putting out new f/w…

Post by: d01100100 on May 05, 2009, 03:06:48 AM
I had ordered a new router, and waited until I got it before trying to load the 1.20 firmware.

I had tried 1.12, 1.15 and 1.16 previously.

1.12 - allowed me to actually change my settings, but under heavier load the LAN ethernet port would just stop working after a while.  I would have to unplug and replug in the ethernet jack or stop and start the interface on the system.

1.15 - once I had the initial configuration in place, any change would cause the router to reboot.  This was very bad considering I had NTP enabled and my router was rebooting constantly until I did a hard reset.

1.16 - allowed me to change the configuration but I kept getting dropped calls on my UMS (voip), even with no network load on the system.

I just loaded 1.20 last night, and so far it hasn't crashed on me.  I'm able to change my configuration without the system rebooting.  I've had a torrent download in excess of 1.4MB/s (yes that's megabytes) without my VPN or UMS dropping.  I've gotten some spikes while playing XBL, but I'm not sure whether that was due to the opponent or my connection.  It wasn't happening often and only for select opponents.

With 1.20 I don't see TX Packets Dropped on LAN like previous firmwares.

I use QoS/Gamefuel for VOIP, XBL and Nortel VPN client.  I have port forwarding setup.  I don't use DNS relay, I have 2 caching nameservers local to LAN that I use instead.  I don't have wireless enabled (I have another router doing that).  I do still continue seeing the local loop spam due to the FIOS set top boxes broadcasting UDP.  It would be nice if the router could consider 169.254.1.X to be ignorable and not log it.

One thing I did differently this time was the 30/30/30 reset.  I had never even heard of this method of reset previously, and it took a little googling for a clear explaination of exactly when to hold down the reset button, and whether you need to hold it when pulling the power plug and powering the system on.  I honestly don't know if this reset fixed my issues or the firmware or both.

I'm going to wait a few days, I've got 30 days to return the other router.  Hopefully this fixes the issues Iv'e been having.

Yes.. So far this firmware appears to be good. I finally got to test it last night. Streaming movies to my xbox 360 and DSM-520. Played a couple games online without a hiccup. Port forwarding rules work. I set up DyneDNS and can access my ftp server from home, RDP, and remote manage. So far so good.

BTW Reinvented.. Thanks for starting this thread!

I've noticed that I've had some very poor wireless performance, when it comes to downloading on both 1.16 and 1.20. Speedtests show fine and all, and that works correctly.  However, for example when I download something from let's say Nvidia.com, it cannot top more than 390 KB/sec.  However, 1.15 was fine in this regard, which is what I used prior to 1.20.  "G" still does the same thing.  And I can be sitting about 5 feet away, and it will cause it to do the same exact thing.  It will start out strong, and then completely die.

Can anyone else confirm this?  Maybe this is the reason why the wireless has so many errors, and what not.  But, wired works completely fine, but "N" completely bombs out, and cannot download.  So, please...more fixes for wireless!

I've had the same thing, but I disregarded it.  I have had a couple times where WAN and LAN both die, and it times out.  WLAN dies out too.  Normally if I reset my adapter it will start working again.  I'm not sure what causes it though.

This is the first fw that I've used where no lan errors have been generated.  Usually I'll have a few by now but none so far.  My internet access seems to be faster with this fw than with the other post 1.02 stuff I've used.  So far I'm happy with this since I've not experienced any problems yet.

Am I really doing work outside of work!?!  ;D  11pm PST anyways... I'm doing this for the people, just reporting my feedback  ;) Like I said, I was going to test out wireless earlier in this thread so here's the run down.

unfortunately only wireless laptops I have in house are 2 macbooks (wireless), 1 desktop pc (wired), DSM-520's(wireless) and xbox 360 bridged through a DAP-1522 (Wireless).

No problems streaming videos from multiple media players simultaneously
No problems playing games on xbox live
No problems downloading wireless

Initial test: Test download speeds wireless
Results: 30MB file downloaded at 1.6MB a second

I have not tested a larger file yet. Besides anything over 500GB I prefer to do over wired connection, but I will still give it a try. I'll use sendbigfile.net and upload a 1GB file then download it wirelessly... Not tonight though I'm getting kinda tired  :-\

Yeah...I can't attach a screenshot here.  But, my downloads will absolutely not peak above 340 KB/sec from Nvidia, over wireless, and when my MBP is 3-5 feet away.  Further away, it's even worse.  My connection is fine via wired, but holy crap...wireless is a whole different thing.  Again, I had this problem on 1.16 and 1.20.  1.15 worked fine...not sure what it was.

I'm pretty sure you have your wireless configured properly. But I would like to know how you have it set up. Are your wireless drivers up to date?

How big is the file you're trying to download? Can you post me a link? Have you tried others sites and experienced the same speeds?

I'm going to try and get me another 4500 with older firmware and compare it to the one I have set up at home.

After dealing with beta F/W 1.16 I was very skeptical and hesitant about installing this latest flavor! I must say I find it extremely stable with just some minor glitches. First there's the login, Once on the keyboard I like to stay there, so I've gotten into the habit of entering my password then hitting enter. OOPS, can't do that anymore. Have to grab the mouse and then click. Like I said just a minor thing. The other is I've lost the functionality of shareport. It took me awhile to get it up and running. It's a problem with the Onecare firewall no doubt!!!!! If anyone out here has settings that will work I'd be much obliged for your assistance. I followed the reset instructions as posted with no luck. I just want to thank the moderators for there dedication and efforts. ;D

I think you can use tab and it'll go to the next blank input field. But CAPTCHA is useless to me.  ;)

Updating of Shareport just requires a reinstall of the software usually.  Unless something drastically changed, in which it requires a newer version.  I don't use Shareport, because it took so long for them to make a Mac version.

I wouldn't ever use Onecare Firewall, since it's probably very restrictive.  I'm not sure there's anything you can do in regards to your settings, to make it work, since it is in fact a software problem.

After upgrading to this firmware, I no longer see my device with Shareport.

I have reinstalled the software; I've even upgraded the version to no avail.

*Sigh*...  It sees nothing.

When I install the DIR-655 Beta Shareport (1.10), it sees it but cannot connect.  The latest Shareport (1.14, older) for the DGL-4500 fails to even "see" the device (a printer, in my circumstance).

Any suggestions?

So far with this Beta FW V1.20 all is working shockingly great with the exception of shareport. I've concluded that it's not a firewall issue but either the new FW or the utility. I'll patiently wait for a fix, it's not a crucial process for me but it's nice to have!!!!

I've been seeing slow speeds on the nvidia site for over a week now.  I don't think it's the router. I think it's their server. I'm still running 1.15

Normally, I'd get 1.6 mb/s downloading a driver, but it's been slow.  Try a few other sites with big files yeah?

But, when I compared the MD5 hash on both bins, they are identical! This means, the final version is the same as the beta version, anyone can explain this?

The beta was pretty much the same as the one put out for the Dir-655 weeks earlier. With a final released a few days before the "beta" for the dgl-4500 was put out. So it seems what we got was something dlink wanted to go out on all their most recent dir and dgl routers.

I wonder if any real beta testing was done with the dgl-4500 to fix problems that users are having.

Tired of messing around with D-Link and all the broken promises?  Want to roll your
dgl-4500 firmware back to 1.15 right now?  The two links below have the fix. This
is not a joke.  It works.  Both sites are very reputable and people have tested it.

and

Follow the simple instructions and tell d-link where to stuff it.

Christmas was a little late this year but better late than never!
