Hi I have a DIR 817-LW for a couple of years which is connected to COX cable via DHCP.

The router has been working well but I am looking for a way to enable Always On. The reason Cox dropped the internet connection once a while and it happened while we were on travel. This router was never retried to get a new IP after the Cox was back online so essentially I lost control of all my WIFI devices for one week.

I just saw this new BETA firmware and noticed it has a new feature: "6. Support Schedule Reboot" which can partially solve my problem as I can schedule this router to reboot every night sometime which will acquire a new IP in case the Cox internet gets dropped that day.

However I checked all menu after updating to this new firmeware but wasn't able to find the menu to enable this. Could you help?

Thanks

Link>Welcome!

  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?

Always ON is usually seen for PPPoE connections only.

IF the router is dropping the connection, usually means there is a problem between the router and the modem...

Thank you. Will try re-refresh the firmware following your instructions sometime later.

It is a Motorola cable modem surfboard model# an-6141 connecting to Cox cable.

Thanks

Ok, so thats a cable modem. I would have the ISP check signals and line quality up to the modem.
Be sure there are no coax cable line splitters in between the modem and ISP service box.

Thanks for your reply. I will double check.

To clarify, Most of the time the cable internet is good. Only occasionally the internet connection got dropped but it looks to me the Router wasn’t self recovered after internet was back. Normally a router reboot will fix the issue but it is very inconvenient when we were on travel.

Does it mean the router will always automatically try acquiring the IP whenever the internet is dropped and then back online? I saw PPPOE option has a polling interval so I am expecting Dynamic IP option will also do the sam. I might be wrong though if the router just passively takes the IP assigned to it by the modem...

Thanks again.

The router should definitely keep trying to connect if it does lose the connection to the Internet.  Has it ever reconnected on its own after your Internet drops?

It could be an issue with the modem not resending DCHP to the router until the router reboots sending a signal out, but the keep-alive should do that. Very strange. You have a good modem so that is unlikely the issue.

Does this happen with older firmware? Try downgrading to the last "official" version and see if it continues.

It is a good idea to schedule a daily reboot on your router.

Thanks. I haven't seen this issue before - it may have but the router tried reconnecting after internet outage so I never noticed that. Only this time it was a painful experience as I couldn't control my home device while on travel - it had been raining for a week however I wasn't able to turn off my sprinkler...

I just re-refreshed the firmware with the new feature and did factory default reset before and after firmware update then restored my saved config. However I still wasn't able to find where I can access below feature.

6. Support Schedule Reboot

Do you know which Menu it is under? Also I notice my firmware version is 1.04beta with Current Firmware Time : 04/28/2017 14:45:00 which has a timestamp different from the original post: v1.04 Build 04 BETA   01/15/2018

Thanks for your help.

The firmware timestamp may be on the firmware version they based the beta on. The date in the release notes is when D-Link receives the file and posts it so there can be a different date.

Try http://192.168.0.1/version.txt to get the actual firmware date.  (192.168.0.1 is the IP address of the router)

The scheduled reboot should be under TOOLS > SYSTEM.
