Title: Lexmark Wireless Printer Problem Pro 805
Post by: ZMEU.NET on February 17, 2013, 11:10:44 AM
After a random time between some hours and maximum 2 days after confirming the wifi connection to my dir 655, the lexmark wifi printer closes connection to my router , trouble code signal too weak -255db quality unacceptable.
I tried almost all possible settings to keep the wifi connection always on between the printer  and the router.Restarting the router  does notihng. To restore the connection i must reconfirm in the printer setup that i am using a wifi connection and not as cable one.
I also have an old netgear router WGR614v7 and the connection  with the printer remains active for weeks :) . Also the Lexmark service confirmed that the problem is not caused by the printer. I don't have any other problems  keeping the wifi connection between the router and other devices.

Link>Welcome! (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=41537.0)
What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
Link>What Firmware (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=47512.0) version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?
Has a Factory Reset been performed?
How far away is the printer from the router?

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
Turn off ALL QoS (http://vonage.nmhoy.net/qos.html) or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.
WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP server feature. Tools/Time.

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=48327.0)
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer (http://www.metageek.net/) to find out. How many?

Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Enable WMM Enable (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=50738.0) Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Using a short (400ns) guard interval can increase throughput. However, it can also increase error rate in some installations, due to increased sensitivity to radio-frequency reflections. Select the option that works best for your installation.

Is the printer the only other wifi device connected to the 655? I presume other devices don't exhibit this behavior?

Yes only with the lexmark printer... very tricky problem, no problem with other wifi devices, but the printer is always connected if i choose the netgear router.  Hope there is  a dlink setting to keep the wifi connection alive with the lexmark printer.

One test you could try, Set up Wifi Security to WPA and TPIK only and test, then run a test with no security on the printer and test.

I would check with the Mfr of the printer to see if there is any FW updates.

Does the print have a USB or LAN wired connector by chance?

If other devices are connecting and remain connected to the 655 with out loosing the connection and the printer does, would point to the printer having a problem maintaining the connection, not the router.

The Lexmark service did not detect  the problem, i thought they lied but
there are no problems   with my old netgear router, only with the d-link one.
I have always the latest Firmware on the printer , none new since 2011
The problem may be the incompatibility between the d-link router and the printer, maybe it can be solved by tweaking one of the thousands of  d-link settings. I feel so unlucky , nobody else encountered my problem :(
Why are you pointing to the USB port of the printer? You want me to connect it via USB to the d-link router?lol

The Lexmark printer network setup page say signal unacceptable, but it says it is still connected to my d-link router.. maybe the d-link router shuts down the WiFi connection with the printer  but don't understand why.  The Lexmark printer is also weird when it shows red x  on the active d-link connection, it also can't find any other of 10 WiFi networks.. If i reconfirm in Lexmark  printer touch panel connection settings  that i  want to connect via WiFi  ( vs Ethernet) then it reestablishes in seconds the wifi connection to the d-link router and  then i can also find the 10 other WiFi networks.

Are you joking? after exploring all the settings you recommend me to buy another router? wtf?!  WiFi congestion? I live in a town with flats/apartments not in the fields :))
Yes of course i have a cordless phone, i also have mobile phones, i don't live in the 19th Century.
Those 10 wifi networks have weak signal , no strong signal to cause any interference.
How come a cheap old NETGEAR G router can face all these modern problems and keep alive for weeks.
Also the N protocol is far better than G but it seems on NETGEAR it doesn't help.
Title: Re: Lexmark Wireless Printer Problem Pro 805

Well first I would try to hook up the old netgear back up. Even if the problem didn't occur with the Netgear "then" it may "now". Really sounds like the wireless antenna on the printer is kicking out so we have to rule that our first. If the problem re-occurs after 12hr with the Dlink, then I would say run the Netgear for 24 and see if it happens.

If not, could be a issue with the security and the printer waking from Idle. Check out this thread (http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/peripherals/f/3528/t/19361038.aspx?PageIndex=2). Seems similar. Its amazing what Google can find. :-)

"Final update, the printer works and logged in fine this morning. The SSID security settings that work are:
WEP  and also  WPA-PSK [TKIP]"

But to be clear, since this is isolated to one device, its more a printer issue then a router issue. May want to try the Printer's forums if that solution doesn't work.

Are you joking? after exploring all the settings you recommend me to buy another router? wtf?!  WiFi congestion? I live in a town with flats/apartments not in the fields :)) Exactly, if you live in a area with alot of other Wifi routers near by, they are also using up the channels, even at low signal strength, the channel is being used up. You can't occupy the same channel with out interferences.

Yes of course i have a cordless phone, i also have mobile phones, i don't live in the 19th Century. Any of these phone running ont the 2.4Ghz frequency? I wasn't trying to tell you that you needed to live in the 19th century. Trying to get more details on your surroundings.

Also the N protocol is far better than G but it seems on NETGEAR it doesn't help. If this is an old generation router, then it problaby does not have the "Good Nieghbor Policy" coding included that dictates how routers work around others as newer generation routers do now days. Your 655 has this coding as other newer and recent generation routers now have and has to be adheard to by ALL Mfrs.

One thing you could do, if the printer seems to be having the problem with the 655 Wifi, connect up the older NG router and set it up as a wired AP and have the pritner connect to it.

Interesting using guest zone wpa tkip..  on the printer  i now get NOT CONNECTED and ORANGE  Led .
To recover connection i restarted the router.

Before without guest zone and wep wpa/wpa2 aes  etc g only etc . on the printer  i had CONNECTED and GREEN Led  .
To recover connection tried restarting the router but no chance, i only needed to restart the printer.

Maybe there is a power-save problem not on/only on lexmark printer but also the d-link router.

Interesting  that even despite connection is working when working the print server shows randomly..

I still believe its a compatibility issue with the printer and the encryption. I cant make any other suggestions then those I have. If the other wireless connections work while the connection to the printer goes down, its not specifically a router issue. You might try contacting Lexmark. There are different steps which can be done on the printer to help. Here is a page from their support

i contacted those lexmark i.d.i.o.t.s 5 times! last time they said  to remove completely kaspersky :)) never heard of kaspersky jamming wifi .
Now printer is still conected i see in dlink wifi status 11g  24M  24mbps only??? but can't connect to the printer despite it's connected! Few hours ago 25 mbps alternated with 36 mbps. ALWAYS  SIGNAL IS 100%

if old netgear g works with same security protocol same encryption than is not a printer issue, the problem is the dlink router!

DYING? on wireless N my lexmark printer goes up to 65 mbps. i chosen G only as you said, i chosen WPA and TKIP as you said. What's the next mathematical combination?

It's clearly a DLINK problem, it's incompatible with Lexmark printer.

I only use it as a normal router not connected to internet.

That is a power saving problem with your printer, not the 655 router.

Ok i finished setting the Netgear as AP,  if the lexmark will remain connected for more than 2 days  then it's ok.
What to do after to diagnose the D-Link problem?

Am i the only one using Lexmark printer with D-LINK Router?

I think D-link is not prepared to understand the wifi connection of a printer in power save. The netgear has 2-3 settings,  instead the dlink has 20 settings for the Wifi. The b/g/n or wep wpa wpa2 aes tkip are a false track.
There may be something with the Transmission Rate :   Best (Automatic)..
or ADVANCED WIRELESS SETTINGS
Transmit Power :
Beacon Period :    (20..1000)
RTS Threshold :    (0..2347)
Fragmentation Threshold :    (256..2346)
DTIM Interval :

These default settings may not work with WiFi Lexmark power save .

Ok i found an interesting article here http://forums.smallnetbuilder.com/archive/index.php?t-4741.html    Problems with WNDR3700 and Lexmark wifi printers.

02-25-2011, 07:57 PM
I got a problem with my Lexmark S305 printer, loosing connection to my WNDR3700, sort of.

Sort of, because it's still listed in the attached devices, that tells me that the router didn't forget the printer, so I guess that the Lexmark printer has a problem, sort of sleeping to deep... But read on, I can force it, trough the router, to wake up with out touching the printer.

You should also know that after set up or power up, it all starts out working perfect. Then the printer goes to sleep and if no one prints anything for more then an hour or so, I can't print from it again. To get it to connect again, I have to pull the power from the printer and reconnect it. An other option is from the WNDR3700 in the advanced wireless tap, just click apply in the bottom. I think that make the router power cycle the wireless radio and some how it reconnects and start working again. I cant seem to figure out if the problem is in the Router or printer end. Since I can do things in both ends to make it reconnect...

One guy in the WNDR3700 forums said the following:
After a specified time every wifi device changes it's security key automatically (known as 'key renewal'). This is to keep the wifi connection secure. In some routers one can change the time ,measured in seconds, until the key renewal will occur. The default time is often 3600 seconds, on my Dlink DIR-655 I could change this. Unfortunately the WNDR3700 does not offer this option. So after this time the router wants to renew the WPA encryption. It seems the Lexmark Pro901 is not able to to this while in standby. Once this key renewal has failed it won't connect afterwards. I don't know if this is an error with the router or the Lexmark printer.

It seems like he could be right, and that I have the same problem with my Lexmark S305. But who is at fault here? I imagine that both company's is going to point fingers at the other, not doing anything to fix the problem.

What do you think? Also is anyone in here using the WNDR3700 with wifi printers and does it work as it should, as in when you press print, it prints, even if you haven't been printing for a month?

Thanks Kasper

You still don't get it or worst not willing to help me more than copy pasting  useless Dlink questionnaire of all possible settings.
The guy explained here this common problem: After a specified time every wifi device changes it's security key automatically (known as 'key renewal'). This is to keep the wifi connection secure. In some routers one can change the time ,measured in seconds, until the key renewal will occur. .... So after this time the router wants to renew the WPA encryption. It seems the Lexmark Pro901 is not able to to this while in standby. Once this key renewal has failed it won't connect afterwards. I don't know if this is an error with the router or the Lexmark printer.

If all other devices work fine, it's the Printer's issue not the router.  First thing to look for is a firmware upgrade for the printer.  Lexmark often updates their firmware.  You can also try disabling the standby mode on the printer to see if it reatains its connection.

of course i have the latest firmware, is from 2011. My only problem is in power save, no reason to leave it always power on,no problem then.
i disabled security on my router , leaving the router invisible and activating mac access control... Lexmark in power save is still connected in power save since 36 hours.
But now my dir 655 randomly restarts, i got hacked??
From the logs i see someone sent restart command Jan 1 00:00:45    UDHCPD Received a SIGTERM

Title: Re: Lexmark Wireless Printer Problem Pro 805

Hello,
Anybody in the house? Maybe the Dlink router has extra features in wifi security than the old Netgear.  If i disable the security on dlink my Lexmark printer won't lose the wifi connection after days in power save.

It's clearly a DLINK problem, i tried all wifi security protocols on NETGEAR and the Lexmark printer successfully remains connected for days in power save.
It seems DLINK kicks out inactive wifi clients!
