Title: Gaming and Game Fuel for Modern Warefare 2? and Ramdon Questions
Post by: Juicy J on February 19, 2010, 11:09:52 AM
Hello, i read the stick above by FurryNutz (thank you for the post) and i wonder if there was a specific rule just for MW2 or is for whatever is on Xbox Live, for example, the rule FurryNutz created for Xbox live does that work for every game you run on xbox live or is it specifically for xbox live strictly, like downloading movies streaming netflix and etc?
I just received the router yesterday from Amazon and i saw that there is a new firmware available but i tried upgrading from the browser thing (192.1...) and said there was no update available but on the webside there is a newer one that came out this year. Well i tried to upgrade but it said i didnt have permissions but as i was reading through the forums i read that the newer firmwares disable or tune down gaming and game fuel is that true? Also why couldnt i have installed the new firmware when i tried and should i or just stick with the version it has now?

With Gaming and Game Fuel on what kind of differences could i see if i didnt have those on. It claims no lag but is that really achievable with this router?

If i think of any other questions ill come back to this post

The Gaming rules seems to work for all the games i've played using XBL. I play All Halo series, MW2 and Left4Dead. I have asked for more information for other non xbox console experiences since I don't own one. There was one other on here that mentioned that those settings worked for him on is PS console. I stream Netflix movies all the time with these settings.

The update FW feature on the 4500 seeks out what has been posted on the dlink web site and if they have enabled that feature from there side to be posted through there network to the 4500. They may not have it enabled. Most of us on here just downloaded the FW as a file and applied it manually. When using FW updates or making any changes to the router, make sure your logging in as ADMIN, not user.

I would run your unit as is and see how it work before updating. Nothing says you can't however as a rule, if it works, don't fix it. What version of FW is currently loaded?
If you chose to update FW, save off your configuration file before updating, that saves you from having to manually going back and reconfiguring the 4500 again. And when doing a FW update, the current configuration gets wiped out after you perform the update and then do a factory reset to ensure a clear clean slate to work with. After the reset, upload the config file and your off and running.

Always save ur config file. LOL

While using this router and game rules, it's not perfect and it won't be, it's as good as it can be, given the fact that other networks, traffic, and user interventions will show that any networking will introduce some lag. The only thing that I've noticed, and any one can do, if there adept enough with there networks and system is to make there systems as good and clean as they can get it. I've seen lag and other goofy things going on while gaming, doesn't mean I'm at fault, however doesn't meant there are other things to consider down the lines.

I've been using my 4500 for about 5 years now and enjoy it greatly for gaming and general internet usage. Ya, there have been some FW builds that aren't the best, however DLink and others on here have strived to help each other out and weed out the bugs and make the next FW builds better.

Hope this helps. Let us know if you need any more help.

I have Firmware Version :1.21NA,  2009/07/09, which do you have?
How do you save your config and how would you reapply it?
I also read theres 2 verions A1 or A2 something like that, how do you determine which do you have?

There is a white sticker on the box... just below the Serial Number it shows the H/W and F/W information. I am looking at mine right now... I just received the router a couple hours ago. lol

I have version A2.
Another question about the USB, i use this old camera like a flash drive, everything i connect it to looks at it as a storage device so i connected it to the modem and nothing happened, i applied the settings in the web browser config, what is going wrong?

I'm running v1.22NA on my 1st 4500 and v1.15 on my 2nd 4500 I got from here in the forums for testing. There both A1's. There has been some issues seen with using v1.21NA however I would recommend running what is currently loaded until you seem to find issues before updating.

Go to the routers web page and log in. Look for Tools at the top, and select it. On the next page, on the left side, select System. There you will see sections on the right side on where to save and upload config files.

I think you have to install additional shareport software from the dlink web site. I haven't used this port yet so I don't have much experience. Look in the 4500 Additional Downloads section for this.

DHCP Reservation under Basic->Network settings. You'll need to know the Mac address of your Xbox

How do i set that up? i have the mac address and the current IP of my xbox. If my ip were to change next time i turn back on the DHCP reservation will collect the new xbox IP?

DHCP Reservation allows you to pick an address that your Xbox will always be assigned. You can just use whatever address you set up in the Gamefuel options as the IP address you want it at.

OK i changed the IP to the current one, so if im understanding this right, i enter the current IP and the Mac address in the DCHP reservation it will alway pick that IP every time i boot up my xbox 360?

DHCP will assign the same IP every time to that particular MAC address (your Xbox).  It just keeps your Xbox at the same place so you can use the rule based on IP address.

I did the DCHP Reservation and it works great. Is there any way to know if the game and game fuel settings are working? I believe there is a difference but I would like to see some stats. Also I was looking at my wireless statistics and I have a lot of errors. Is there a way to fix the wireless errors because I game wirelessly?

Your going to get some errors when using WiFi. However if your using v1.21NA, that version of FW has known issues. I would test it out and see how ur gaming goes. It it's not working well, lagging or your disconnecting from games prematurely. I would update to v1.22NA. I don't game on WiFi since it's not as stable as wired connection all the way around. I do understand that not everyone can game over a wired connection either. My buddy's son uses WiFi. His setup is mentioned in the Gaming and Gamefuel sticky.

My son games wirelessly, and he's experiencing far less lag with the WGL-4500 than with our old Linksys WRT-600N, but that one is on FW 1.15 (mine is the v1.22 "guinea pig").

According to this link: http://support.xbox.com/support/en/us/nxe/xboxlive/getconnected/CompatibleNetworkEquipment/CompatibleNetworkingEquipment.aspx, Microsoft has listed v1.21NA as the Xbox Live firmware for the DGL-4500, but given the bugs we hear so much about, perhaps v1.22NA is better (v1.22NA is so recent, they may not have gotten around to certifying it yet).  It reduced my errors by about 70%. The errors most likely have something to do with interference, perhaps from someone's cordless phone or baby monitor.

Yes, v1.21NA has alot of errors. I would try v1.22NA. My buddies router is running the same thing and his son is enjoying the WiFi on his xbox.

Im currently using v1.22NA. When I bought a 2nd 4500, I loaded it up with v1.15NA and gamed on that as well for about 2 weeks then switched back to the v1.22NA router. Still on it, played 5 hours of MW2 last nite.

Title: Re: Gaming and Game Fuel for Modern Warefare 2? and Ramdon Questions
Post by: FurryNutz on February 21, 2010, 02:17:44 PM
yes the file is zipped i believe so you need to unpack the file from the zip file to your desktop or where ever you know it's located on ur PC. There will be two files, .txt and .bin. The .bin is the one you want to have the router use.

It worked but my restore file doesnt work it says  :(

Restore Out of Valid Range

The restored configuration file is not correct. You may have restored a settings file that contains one or more values that are out of the valid range permitted for this release.

Try the restore again with a valid restore configuration file.

Please press the button below to continue configuring the router.

What browser are you using? I have seen others on here having the same problem. Including my buddies going from v1.21 beta FW to v1.22NA. Sometimes the saving of the file gets corrupt. I have been using a Mac to do all my 4500 stuff. Only once or twice to do any saving and FW updates on a Windows PC. Sorry this didn't work. Wonder if there are values in the configuration file that are not supported in the new FW. Its possible. If anything having to manually configure the 4500 again isn't a bad thing, you get to know the 4500 features and get really familiar with it. I might try clearing the browser cache to be sure then try the upload again, if it fails then could be that you'll have to manually configure again. After thats all done, do another re-save.

I would send a PM to Sesca or Lycan on here about this. Mention that you saved the config file then updated, reset to factory then tried to reapply the config file and got this error. This has happened a couple of times talking with you and my other buddy. DLink should know of then to effect getting more information to us about this process.

Ya, sorry bud. There could be changes from v1.21 to v1.22 that the process can't accept the older settings that the v1.21 used. I hoping that Dlink can figure this one out. Ya think the upload process would be able to strip out the values it can't or doesn't support. I to use Safari for Mac. You on PC? Wonder if there is a problem with Safari on Windows. I know that DLink says that Safari isn't supported, however I'm not sure of they mean all platforms or used windows? I would use FF or IE on Windows for doing any FW and config updates.

Kewl, ya I use Flock on my Mac. Works well. I use Safari for doing general maintenance and tweeking if needed on the 4500 and chatting in the forums and XBL. Ya, you get used to some of the features and doing things in the 4500 long enough, sometimes it's just better to manually reconfigure then save off. It's not hard.

Keep in mind that errors can be caused by the remote side as well. It's possible that one of your devices is a contributor to the number. But your errors are still a low percentage, so I think you're good regardless.

I have my MacBook Pro using the N only from the 4500 and I have an Airport Extreme broadcasting the B and G bands only for all other devices. I still get some errors on the N only but seems good enough for general internet. I think your set up is good. Hows the gaming going? I see your online.

Hey my router keeps disconnecting me from the internet, i have a signal but the internet isnt getting through somehow, for instance, right now im on my xbox online with a connection and for some reason i cant get a connection here on my mac. I went to the network settings and to network status and my internet and server are down but im still gaming on xbox live, so im wondering whats that about and its happening to my iphone also, nothing with load but its connected fine. I reset my dsl modem and i just rebooted my router and it seems to still be doing it, what could be the problem?

Did you set ur Xbox out on the DMZ? This is odd behavior for sure. Never need this before. Hmm. And the WAN section of the router is reporting that the Server is down? Are you getting any information on the WAN side? Hmm. Wonder if you should save off your config, do a factory reset, do some testing with out loading the Config file. See if you get the same thing. Of course, set up a simple WiFi network.

no i havent done anything about a DMZ, my macbook network diagnostics is telling me that the "internet and server" are down. Im trying to see how its happening, my xbox dropped from xbox live once but ive dropped internet on my macbook at least 5 or 7 times, it began happening last night, i had a signal but no internet was coming through.

Question how often would one restart ones router? Mine has been online without a reset for 22 days, the reason i ask is because my streaming seems to be sluggish. For instance youtube, i never have to pause it but lately i have to because it would catch up and right now im streaming a movie over a website and it has to buffer almost every 10 seconds and i normally wouldnt since i have adiquite(spell check lol) speed. I checked my dsl service on there service page and there arent any problems reported on their page so im wondering could it be the router since it hasnt been reset in so many days?
Thanks

Since i dont want to triple post i will add to here, Recently i bought the Wireless N adapter for my xbox and turned my router to 5ghz N only and the amount of errors since gaming a full night was 1 lol yes one error, here are my stats. Now i only did this for last night so i wont have a lot of sent and receive. you could say it was a test run. Ill post results for running 2.4 ghz g+n gaming tomorrow morning.

Nice to see some stats on N gaming for WiFi. Hope it worked well for you last night. I was going to play but was kind of tired.

As for the router reset.

The router technically should never have to be reset accept for updates and possible troubleshooting. Also sounds like the data coming from your streaming is getting bogged down somewhere over a period of time. I would query one of the Moderators and ask them of this issue.

if you did a reset thru the web page then you did a soft reset. If you pulled the power cord and then plugged it in, thats a soft reset as well. If you Held down the reset button or selected Factory Defaults in the web page then you did a hard reset.

could be my comptuer then or what i think is the prioritization of the router but i never had this problem before and my xbox is off. Ill disconnect the router and go hard wire and see if i can see a difference

So i wouldnt double post i can verify that it is the router, hardwire i can see the buffer zoom off and never had to pause it

I use the settings listed in the Gameing and Gamefuel. I would give those a try. Also I would do a full factory reset and don't change anything and see if that does anything.

Has anyone able to setup a call of duty world at war pc dedicated server 1.7  through the DGL - 4500. I am having some terrible headache due to this router. Been able to establish port forwarding set to : 28960 tcp and udbp: 20800,20810,28960-28970 . Now, when i run port forward utlity and input port # 28960 tcp & udp they say its open successfully. However, when running the server, and double checking the ports tcp:28960 is open and udp: 28960 is closed. And that my isp 73.83.32.xxx:28960 i have friends say they are able to access the server. But when I join the server I can not see it at all in the cod 5 browser nor console can not connect. Is this some sort of bug with localhost. ? Also, too. I am able to access the server via RconTool  with my public isp: 73.83.32.xxx: 28960 and with local lan 192.168.0.xxx

DGL -4500

Furrynuts i have play station 3 how can i enable gaming fuel for it? Reason for me asking this is that when my brother turns on his Xbox 360 my ps3 losses all its speed to the  Xbox 360 :( its like gaming fuel gives him all the bandwidth and me nothing. I have tried disabling gaming fuel but then everyone lags and no one will have a steady connection not even my pc viewing you tube weird ts like gaming fuel makes everything 10x better btw i am on f.w 1.02. Thats a screen from it now it has more days but though you might enjoy seeing it! xD

How are you connected to the 4500? Wired or Wireless? You can should be able to set up the router and gamefuel settings listed in the Game and Gamefuel sticky at the top of this forum page. See if you can get your PS3 up as 1st priority and the xbox down the line, say 50 or 100. Even try 250 is the max I think. Highest priority is 1 and lowest is 250. Review those settings and see how it goes.

Let us know if you need any more help.

... Just wanted to thank you for your very helpful sticky and all your contribution regarding console gaming. Thanks.
