General Noob esq questions
« on: September 29, 2011, 12:16:10 AM »

Hey guys,

Furrynutz previously informed me that the 4500 will be able to have two xbox 360's connected to xbox live with open NAT's if i follow the sticky, which is awesome and thanks heaps for putting in the effort to write that!

Just another question before I buy this router, will it allow me to easily control the speed of connection to other users on the network? I basically want to tell the router to prioritize all games or anything going to my PC/xbox as my brother tends to download **** whilst I'm trying to game! thus giving me a terrible ping.

Cheers,
Josh

Can you give certain/most traffic going to your Xbox priority? Yes. Can you easily control the speed of connection to others users on the network? Not quite. Your traffic would get priority, but you can't place hard caps. You can't go 1Mb for him, 15Mb for you. If you get fancy with your QoS rules, you can get similar results, but not quite the same, and it can get complicated sometimes. Just a heads up.

Hey I just installed and FuzztNutz setup the DGL-4500 I have purchased 11 ROSEWILL RNX-A5 antenna's for work. The antenna's do fit. My question is do you think I will bet better range if i installed the antenna's on the router?

There was one guy who buy 3 of the external hawking antennas for his 4500 a while ago and said they worked great.

ok i'll install 3 of the ones that I have and I will let you know. Something else to add. Being the 4500 can be switched from 2.4 to 5ghz. The Rosewill RNX-A5's frequency range for these are 2.4-2.5ghz. I do not know if they will work for the 5ghz. Don't see why not, but ya never know.

UPDATE!!!

YES! The RNX-A5's do give a better signal. $6.99ea from www.newegg.com

Ya the guy also mentioned that his Antennas were rated at 2.4Ghz however he said they worked at 5Ghz as well.

Figured they would work for the 5ghz as well being antenna's are only amplifying the signal, and have no affect on the frequency.

Oops, nevermind. I was thinking you were talking about a wireless adapter, not a wireless antenna. Heh.

Generally though, 5Ghz shouldn't be used unless you do live HD streaming. Normal use will make better use of the 2.4Ghz range.

I use wireless devices daily for business and have never been a fan of wireless for streaming. I am a hardwire man. Make all my cables and install everything in the walls. The only thing i need now is a 24 port switch. :P Anyone have a cheap one for sale? and is it IEEE 802.3af compliant?

Here is yet another question. My signal is within the ranges determined by my ISP(Comcast). Would putting a signal booster on my cable line give me a better latency with gaming server I am connecting to? I.E. Having the Gaming server i am connecting to select me for hosting games. Such as Call of Duty: MW2 and BO? When I lived in Minnesota i was using the supplied cable modem from Comcast. I then got a SB5100 from a friend and starting using it and ended up not being the host anymore. The SB6121 i just ordered from newegg will be here today and am hoping it will be a big improvement from the SB5100. I am expecting it will be, being the SB5100 is way old. What are your thoughts on this?

Good Man, Wired is the best way IMO.

I bought a HP 24pt Gb switch a few years back. Sure enjoy it.

I would also recommend that you make sure your line coming to the house is in good condition and the line from your house to the modem is free of line splitters, one is ok, however the more you have the less signal the modem will get. I prefer none. I have a dedicated cable line for Internet. I've never used an AMP and they are mainly needed for long distance cable runs from the house to some where down the line inside the house or building. Amps can produce noise as well so you have some other considerations, Noise in Noise out.

Yeah I have one splitter on the line coming in. When Comcast came I requested a new line be installed from the pole to the house and they did it for me. I know my connections are good it is all new stuff. I think that being I am in New Mexico now that the systems here are a bit outdated and just need to be updated. I think they are still on DOCSIS 2.0 because when i lived in Minnesota i was getting the 20/2 package from them. I move down here and the highest they offer is 16/2 in my area. Although we will see what happens when the SB6121 comes in today and call comcast and give them the MAC to get on. Change the router to gigabit, and see what speeds and connectivity i am getting.

All have to look at it when I get home, I know it's a ProCurve one, paid about $300 for it back then. There are newer generations out now. I think there worth it.  ;D

You might go your ISPs web site and see if they support that modem. I know with my ISP, they didn't support the 6120. I tried to hook it up but it would not sync even thought it was supposed to be backwards compatible. So I waited for Cableone to officially support it.  ;)
