Title: Troubleshooting a product
Post by: pieceoftwnesesht on December 28, 2020, 12:03:51 PM
I couldn't even find a thread on this forum for this device I bought, the DAP-2020. The manual is atrocious. I connected it to a D-Link switch, which is connected to the router with an Ethernet cable. The "manual" told me to go to http://dlinkap, which doesn't work half the time, and go through a "simple setup". Well, I get no internet once it's set-up. And when one of my phones does connect to the WLAN, the speed is around 5 Mbit/s, and it should be 200. The "manual" tells me to "make sure that the Clone MAC address option is ticked during Wizard installation", whatever that means. I don't see that anywhere. Why is this so complicated and poorly executed? There's zero information online about this product.

So I bypassed the switch and now it has internet. But the speed is atrocious, while the signal strength is better than before. How do I switch this thing to 5 GHz and how do I get 200 Mbps wireless in the room where the AP is? Also, why doesn't it work when going through a D-Link switch?

What is the mfr and model# of the main host router?
What is the distance between the DAP and main host router? 30 feet is recommended between the main host router and DAP depending on building materials.
What is the model# of the LAN switch being used?
Are you setting up the DAP for wired AP mode?

H/W version A2
1.00 firmware; the newer one hasn't changed anything anyway, as per the readme. And I don't know how to install it.
European Union.

Router is Sercom Speedport plus provided by ISP.
It's less than 30 feet.
Switch is dlinkgo GO-SW-8G.
Setting up DAP as Access Point.

Without the switch I get around 60 Mbit/s, which is the same as before on the 2.4 GHz mode. The signal is stronger. My wired internet is 200 Mbit/s, which is what I get on my iPhone when connected to WiFi on 5 GHz. How do I get consistent high speed in my living room using the DAP-2020 with a switch?

If you setup the DAP in AP mode, it should get an IP address from the host router. Look at the host routers connected clients table to see if the DAP IP appears there. If you see it listed there, you can access the DAPs web page using this IP address.

If you connect a wired PC to the switch, does it get internet with the switch?

The switch transmits internet, I plugged the cable from it to the STB and it worked. The IP of the DAP is listed when I go to the connected clients, even with the switch. It just doesn't provide an internet connection. Or the speeds are unusable.

Can you access the DAPs web page? If so, you might update FW.
Be sure that the channels used on the DAP are far apart and different from the host routers wifi channels.
DAP set to channel 1 on 2.4Ghz and 11 on the host router. Same with 5Ghz. Use far apart channels.

If nothing seems to resolve this, I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this.

How can I update the firmware? Also, how do I change the channel, or switch to 5 ghz? I don't see any of those options in the dlinkap.

Need to use a wired PC/Laptop and web browser and access the DAPs web page in the web browser.

I know, but I can't access the site. It says "the site can't be reached". Also, I didn't see any of those options when I could access it, under neither wireless nor LAN settings, nor advanced.

I connected the DAP to a different switch that's connected to the router. I accessed the site and found the firmware update tool. Upgrading firmware right now.

I upgraded the firmware. The DAP is connected to the router. It doesn't broadcast wifi, I can't find it anywhere after running the setup wizard. I also want it on 5 ghz and there's no such setting on dlinkap.

Factory reset the DAP and setup from scratch. If you don't see any wifi from the DAP after this, I recommend returning the DAP for another or contact D-Link support and ask about an RMA.

When I disable the 2.4 ghz frequency band there's no DAP wifi. When I reenable it there's DAP wifi. Does this thing even support 5 ghz?! I want it to provide 5 ghz only wifi. All my devices support 5 ghz wifi. How can I change the DAP frequency band? I see no such option on dlinkap.

Well I found out something, the DAP-2020 is not a dual band AP. It's only 2.4Ghz: Operating Frequency 2.4 to 2.4835 GHz
https://eu.dlink.com/uk/en/-/media/business_products/dap/dap-2020/datasheet/dap_2020_datasheet_uk_en.pdf (https://eu.dlink.com/uk/en/-/media/business_products/dap/dap-2020/datasheet/dap_2020_datasheet_uk_en.pdf)

So the DAP isn't faulty. It just does not support any 5Ghz radio.

You'll need to return this model DAP and find one that supports both 2.4Ghz AND 5Ghz.

Literally says on the box it supports 5 ghz. I'm done with dlink.

Can't post image: on the box it says on a label "this product may be operated in 2.4GHz AND/OR 5GHz bands."

Nowhere else on the box does it state operating frequencies.

Ya would like to see a picture of the entire box and a close up of the statement saying supports 5Ghz:
