DNR 202L and Netgear R6300 not playing nice together.
« on: September 19, 2015, 12:36:02 PM »

Hello and thank you for having a place to ask questions.

First let me give some information on my set up (hardware and software)
Motorola SB6141 Cable Modem - 130 MBPS (or better per speed tests)
Netgear R6300 WiFi Router (dual band) connected to SB6141 by Ethernet
Desktop PC (windows 8.1 - I7 core - 16 Gig ram) connected to Netgear router by Ethernet cable (first port)
DNR 202L connected to Netgear router by Ethernet cable (2nd port)
Toshiba Canvio Connect II portable hard drive (1 TB) connected to DNR 202L by USB to HD1 of DNR 202L

Camera's
DCS-5009L - latest firmware - connected wireless (4 feet from router and 202L)
DCS-930LB1 - latest firmware - connected wireless (20 feet from router and 202l)
DCS-932LB1 - latest firmware - connected wireless (4 feet from router and 202l)
DCS-942L - latest firmware - connected wireless (20 feet from router 202l)

There are other devices connected wireless to the same router.
Samsung smart TV (1) - wireless
Apple Ipad (2) - wireless
Apple Phone (3) - wireless
(i think there are about 11 connected devices total at some times)

All software on computer (java and others are up to date)
We have the My Dlink Lite app and MyDlink View app installed on 2 of the iPhone's and shortcuts on the PC desktop for each camera and also the 202L

Router specifics -
Wireless Network (2.4GHz b/g/n) Router channel for wifi set to AUTO
Mode: Up to 450 MBPS
Wireless Network (5GHz a/n/ac) Channel selected
Mode: up to 1300 MBPS - (this channel is not currently used by any wireless devices that i know of)

Internet IP Address - Get Dynamically from ISP
Use Router as DHCP Server is checked (no reserved IP addresses set)

All cameras were set up as standard which i think default to a DHCP Connection.

****************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************
Here is the issue:
I purchased a DNR202L and set it up.
I connect it, connect the cameras, and all is working. (i can use the app on the PC or Iphones to see all 4 cameras)
Within a days time, random cameras disconnect from the DNR 202L until usually 2 are left. (could this be an IP address conflict problem)

The biggest problem is however that after about 24 hours, my router somehow disables the WiFi (the Ethernet port still works and i can still get on the internet on the desk top PC)
I then have to reboot the router to get the WIFI on again

To isolate the issue, i disconnected the Ethernet cord to the router from the DNR 202L and disconnected the power from the DNR 202L.
I am able to see all of the video from the cameras from the my Dlink Lite app for each camera (they seem to all stay on line - 4 days straight now)
The WIFI signal has not been disabled/turned off since i disconnected the DNR-202L

What could be causing the router to turn off wifi when the DNR 202L is connected to the router

I read a few posts and think maybe i should consider reserving IP addresses for the DNR 202L and possibly the cameras as well ... (not sure on that)

Your input on what would be killing my wifi or how to explore what is happening would be much appreciated.
I would also appreciate any input on how to keep the connection on the DNR-202L stable, keep the camera connections stable, and still be able to use the other wifi devices in my home as i do now (with out any additional complicated set up to those devices)

Thank you in advance and please ask any questions that may help diagnose and i will reply with answers ASAP

What wireless modes are you using on the main host router?

It's recommended to set up Static IP addresses for the cameras and DNR
DCS-5009L - 192.168.0.59
DCS-930LB1 -192.168.0.93
DCS-932LB1 - 192.168.0.94
DCS-942L - 192.168.42
DNR-202L - 192.168.0.20

These can be static as cameras and NAS don't need much router management:DHCP
Be sure to enable uPnP, and uPnP Port Forwarding on ALL cameras.

Also you could be running into some bandwidth issues on the router having a lot of wifi devices connected. Some routers can only handle so many wireless devices, usually 20 maybe a limit.

Thanks Furry,

Well before I read your post I decided to add an additional router to my set up. So now I have the Netgear r6300 which is my original router and I also have a dlink DIR-605L. I connected the 605 to the Netgear by cascading it. (A LAN port (#3) of the Netgear connected to the WAN port (Internet) of the  Dlink router.) I changed the IP address of the dlink router (third octet) and verified it had the same subnet mask. Both routers have DHCP enabled. This seems to have fixed my issue with the Netgear router loosing/turning off its wifi.

I now have ALL cameras connected to the the DLINK 605L and also have the DNR connected to the 605L

My only issue left is that cameras seem to drop off of the DNR 202L which by reading your post may be an issue with not having a static IP on the cameras and DNR.

So here are my questions.
1. Which devices do I go into to set the static IP for the cameras? Do I go into each cameras main UI set it there, and then add those same IP's to the DNR-202L and Dlink DIR-605L?  Do I then set a static IP for the DNR 202l and ad that to the Dlink 605 router? (I am not familiar with the proper process of setting up static IP addresses so I may need a little help on this)
2. Do I need to set the static IP addresses for the cameras and DNR202 to the values you listed in your reply to me above? My current cameras and DNR IP addresses last numbers are in the .101 and higher range.
3. To enable uPnP and uPnP port forwarding, is this done in the Camera UI or in the routers UI or both. (Does it also need to be done in the DNR-202L?)

Also I seen your reference to NAT I have no experience with that, is it something I should read up on for configuring my set up?
Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it.

(I am not familiar with the proper process of setting up static IP addresses so I may need a little help on this) You can set Static IP addresses on each cameras an DNR thru the UI. Once set on the devices, no need to enter in on the router.
2. Do I need to set the static IP addresses for the cameras and DNR202 to the values you listed in your reply to me above? My current cameras and DNR IP addresses last numbers are in the .101 and higher range. I recommend using Static IP addresses in the range of 192.168.0.2 thru .99 or 192.168.0.201 thru .254. Static IP addresses need to be out side of the default DHCP IP address pool which is 192.168.0.100 thru .199 or .200.
3. To enable uPnP and uPnP port forwarding, is this done in the Camera UI or in the routers UI or both. (Does it also need to be done in the DNR-202L?) Yes

Also I seen your reference to NAT I have no experience with that, is it something I should read up on for configuring my set up? Not at the moment.
Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it.

Hi Hidden96,

Your setup sounds a bit like mine...only different. I have a Netgear R6250 dual Wi-Fi, gig router to Arris DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem. The router runs DHCP, using a private IP scheme, for the most part. I say "for the most part" because I was having problems getting the camera events out on email. I sent an SOS to DLink here and Furry helped me out as well. It was suggested, like in your case, to use static IP addresses for the camera network. Since the R6250 doesn't handle multiple IP networks (at least my cursory analysis didn't show it would) static IPs in the router wasn't possible. But, there is the option to reserve addresses within the DHCP range in the R6250. So I set up my camera network device addresses as static to utilize the reserved addresses. A hybrid network if you will. So far it works very well. The network devices seem to set up quicker and easier to get to via the DLink app or directly. (However, a bug that is STILL there is the dropping of cameras off the DNR-202L. I have that problem with the DCS930L, DCS935L, and the DCS5020L. I think it's a DNR202L thing. Needs a fix.)

Note: To determine which addresses to use for the "hybrid" camera network I used the Netgear genie apps network map to find out what the IP address was for each camera and the DNR. I then went into the router and added those addresses to the reserved address list. Then went into each camera and changed from DHCP to static addresses addressing each device per the genie network map info.

Hope this helps.

Have you resolved this? I have the same problem with reserved addressed. 5xxx rather 9xx model cams seems to drop off.  How did you fix it? This is a DNS  202L problem. Individually the cams themselves never lose connection to the router. But somehow the 5xxx ones will lose connection to to the DNS 202L.

Setting a static IP for the cameras has kept them from dropping off. Also  did it for a friend who is having the same problem and had the same result

G;ad the suggestion worked. Hope it helps future users and modern day routers.

Enjoy.  ;)
