DIR-655 reboots the PC
« on: June 22, 2011, 02:30:06 PM »

Hi all! I have used a DWL4300 for about 4 years now and I have been very happy with that router. The other day there were a power surge and my beloved router died. I replaced it with a DIR-655 which I have read alot about and it seemed to be a good choice. Now to the problem. When I was trying to configure the router and setup some port forwarding I came across the reboot process. I have done this before on my old router so I knew what it meant. I clicked reboot and the router went through the reboot cycle. At that same time my PC went down as well and rebooted. I didn't think the PC reboot was related to the router at first but after I had rebooted the router 3 more times I was completly sure they were related somehow. My PC would reboot at the same moment the router would. I even rebooted the router from another PC and all over again it triggered a reboot of my PC. The PC reboot is not controlled so nothing is being saved. It just shuts down and comes back up again.
I really hope there is anyone out there who have had the same problem and hopefully solved it as well. Thanks in advance.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What Firmware version is currently loaded?
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

Are any power management options set on the PCs NIC?
What connection speeds does your PC NIC support?
Also might try setting the LAN connection speeds on the router to manual, try 100 first then 1000.
Ensure Cables are in good condition, use Cat6 if possible. Swap out cables to be sure.
