DSM520 fast forward speed?
« on: September 21, 2009, 01:51:29 PM »

Before I buy DSM520, I'd like to how fast forward speed. I currently have DSM320 and DSM510, DSM320 feels like 2x only, DSM510 can do up to 100x (it actually works quit well.) DSM520 looks like an upgrade of DSM320, it worries me. Thank you.

FF does not work well on this device. U can use a search function e.g. hit search and type in the time you want to go to on the file!

You have the following options (firmware 1.05 and 1.06):
=================
- if you have FW option set (in settings):
FFW / FRW - 2x only
PGUP/PGDN - +/- 30 sec of video
0,1..9 - 0%, 10%... 90% of the video
=================
if you have JUMP set:
type in the time you want to jump to.

The FF and RW is only 2x however you also have the feature on the key pad to jump to areas of the video by increments of 10%. Press 2 for 20% 5 for 50% and so on.

In my experience - FF and RW are worthless.

I'm guessing it depends on the encoding of the file and all that jazz; I've also had mixed results depending on the media server I was running.  Using the true FF and RW - they mostly just never did anything.  The jump functionality or hitting the number keys or using page up and page down didn't work at all for me with D-Link's software.  After I switched to Tversity, they work better, but on certain files it causes the audio and video to get out of synch.

Basically, if you are 20 minutes into a movie and you want to rewind for a second because someone came to your door and you didn't pause it....you are taking a huge gamble trying to jump backwards 60 seconds.  If it works, great.  If it doesn't, the sound and audio get out of synch and the only way (that I've found) to fix it, is to restart the video.  Hence, you are waiting 20 minutes to get back to where you were.

It's honestly pretty infuriating.

Maybe I just haven't found the right 'file-type' to use...but the videos stream great aside from the jumping around, so I dunno.
