Router connection to the internet fails dir 601
« on: April 13, 2011, 06:14:59 AM »

I cant get this damn thing to connect to the internet (att dsl modem). I have ran the installation cd mulitple times and also configured it using the http. If i reset it while everything is hooked up and it makes an internet connection using DCHP (I think its called), but i need a PPPoE connection.

It seems to change my password (the username one that access the modem). The way i know is it always has more characters that the one i was provided by my isp with (*****). I dont enter any information other than my username or password (IP is dynamic). Must i enter a DNS address? What is the proper way to do this? Please advise i am a newb

I have a westell F90-6100 as my modem.

You need to check to see if the DSL Modem has a built in router and if the modem can be bridged. I presume it does and once the modem is bridged, then you can use PPPoE under Setup/Internet/Manual to enter in the account information in the 601 router. Call up your ISP and they can help you bridge the modem. If there good ISPs they might even help you out on the PPPoE settings on the router. Make sure the Always On is checked enabled.

I found some instructions on how to bridge my modem ....    http://forums.att.com/t5/Routers-and-Home-Networks/Do-I-need-configure-the-modem-in-to-bridge-mode/td-p/2026993

I am assuming after i do this the modem will be bridged to my pc. All i would have to do is to uplug the LAN from the pc to the router and reboot both the modem and the router causeing the bridge to now be between the router and modem. Is that right?

Yes you are correct. Make sure the 601 router is set up for PPPoE and the user account information is entered in as per your ISP. Power cycle both Modem and router. Then your PC should get an IP from the router and pass along the internet to the PC.

Do you find it neccessary to specify the network mask and gateway address in the router setting or should it pick them automatically? I dont know if this even applys to a dynamic ip address but i saw it on a webpage and figured i would ask

maybe i should reword this. Does my DNS servers, Default gateway, or my subnet mask constantly change since its not a static ip address? (i have a dynamic)

If they dont change should i be entering this information into the router ass well? I have been allowing it to get its own.

DNS Servers don't change very often. Nor should the gateway if your talking about the WAN side gateway. The ISP WAN IP address can and will change however the router will automatically pick that up. You don't have to do anything for the ISP/WAN side.

This is what you need to do:
After the modem is bridged and the router is online and everything is connected. Log into the routers web page. Go to the Status/Device Info/Wan Section. Make sure you are getting an ISP IP, Subnet and DNS addresses. Copy and paste the DNS only addresses you see here into the Setup/Internet/Manual section if these addresses are not automatically filled in. Sometimes they don't.
Ensure DNS relay is enabled under Setup/Network settings.
Disable Advanced DNS Services if you have this option.

Now for any and all devices you connect to the router, wired or wireless. Go into Setup/Network settings and make sure you are seeing the devices in the routers DHCP Client list. I recommend saving and reserving the IP address for each devices do that the IP address doesn't change and easier to manage and troubleshoot later on.
This takes care of the LAN side of the router.

Let the router restart an restart all of the devices. You should be good to go.
