UPNP/DLNA servers not always appearing on network

(1/3) > >>

dave.leblanc:
Hi,

I have a Med-Large home network with 3 different PCs/devices that regularly act as UPNP media servers. media is regularly streamed to consoles/Android devices in the house. I recently bought the DIR-827 to get an upgraded network to handle the extra throughput of so much media streaming. However, my UPNP devices aren't always discoverable on the network. I have harware revision A1 and firmware 1.0.1 and my settings are nearly identical to the settings described in this post if I can't get this resolved I'm afraid I will have to return this hardware for something more UPNP friendly

See if multicast is enabled in conjunction with UPnP. If it is not, enable multicast and hopefully that will fix your issue. UPnP uses multicast addresses. The DIR-827 is an IGMP router and switch so it could be constraining multicast traffic to other network switches along your layer 2 path in your med-large home network. If your previous router or switches were not IGMP/multicast aware they (your associated hubs/switches) would have broadcasted out the multicast traffic on all ports. IGMP queries, joins, and leaves are primarily issued by clients themselves to either announce their services or to receive service traffic. Most operating systems will automatically issue those igmp packets as the various software applications are used.

As far as my experience with UPnP/DLNA, my 2 Linux boxes, Win7 PC, STB, and the DIR-827 are showing up as expected. At this time, I have not really worked with the DIR-827 DLNA server as of yet. I have worked with the DIR-827 UPnP services as an Internet Gateway Device (IGD) to allow dynamic port mapping for peer-to-peer communications.

How is your home layer 2 network setup? In other words, how are your LAN devices connected via Ethernet cables? Since multicast is layer 2, you could plug in all of troubled network devices into the same switch and see if that does not isolate the DIR-827 as the issue (basically, it constraining the multicast DLNA/UPnP streams via its internal 4 port switch). Also note, not sure how you have setup your WiFi segments (assuming the Android devices). If you are using a Guest LAN for wifi then that guest vlan will not be reachable to the local wired vlan.

I have a DIR-827 with a Netgear Stora NAS/UPNP/DLNA server connected via ethernet, also connected via ethernet are my ps3 and xbox360

I have a DAP-1513 Wireless Media Bridge with 2 Linux PCs connected to it via ethernet and it is bridged with the DIR-827 over 5ghz

I have a Win7PC on 2.4ghz wireless and a couple Android Devices on 5ghz wireless

I have multicast enabled and upnp enabled

my Cable Modem's built in router also has UPNP enabled (this was my previous router and all upnp described above worked fine)

the trouble is that it is not terribly consistent with what device(s) are missing from the UPNP list. What IS consistent is that whichever device(s) have disappeared from the UPNP list are missing from ALL UPNP clients across the entire network. rebooting of the DIR-827 usually causes teh devices to appear again but they do not stay visible permanently

AquaManiac:
How is your cable modem's built-in router being used on the network. From what I understand about your layer 2 network segments is the following:
1 - DIR-827 switch with 4 ports running 2.4 and 5 GHz WiFi. No Guest LANs
1 - DAP-1513 wifi bridge/extender with 2 Linux PCs directly connected to it running over the 5GHz band.
1 - Cable Modem connected somehow running UPnP
1 - Win7 PC on 2.4GHz
1 - 2 Android Devices on 5GHz

Any other LAN segments/switches on your network? I will assume that all of your lan devices connect directly into the DIR-827 either via its 4-port switch or via WiFi 2.4/5.0GHz radios. If you have a spare switch available, I suggest you try removing some of those direct wired lan connections to it and see if those DLNA servers always stay visible. Just trying to help you trouble/confirm the DIR-827 is the problem. If you have more than one IGMP router on the lan segments, it is possible that is causing confusing among your switches assuming they are IGMP snooping.

Also, can you describe how you have setup your wifi segments and SSIDs?

dave.leblanc:
The Cable modems only current purpose is for the DIR-827 to be plugged into it.

the cable modem is setup on 192.168.13.x
the DIR-827 is setup on 192.168.0.x

there are no other switches or routers currently in the network.

the wifi segments have independent SSIDs and are both configured with the following

2.4 mixed mode g/n

WPA-Personal
WPA2
AES
Auto 20/40
Auto Channel

please note a console wired to the DIR-827 will occasionally not be able to see the Stora also wired to the 827 the only fix for this seems to be rebooting one of the two devices
