D-Link DIR-655 to Netgear WNCE2001 to Hitron (CGN3ACSMR) Modem?
« on: November 24, 2016, 02:16:12 AM »

I currently have a Netgear WNCE2001 connected to the Internet Port of a D-Link DIR-655.

The Netgear WNCE2001 connects wirelessly to a Hitron (CGN3ACSMR) Modem independant of the D-LinkDIR-655. When the WNCE2001 is independently connected to either the PC, PS3 or PS4 directly, each device can go online. Each device cannot communicate with the Hitron modem thru its Internal Wifi as the Modem is out of range and cannot be moved, nor can the devices.

All Wi-Fi Devices are connected to the D-Link DIR-655. After attempting to connect the Netgear WNCE2001 to the "Internet Port" on the D-Link DIR-655, I've received the Error Msg: "The addressing of the Internet side learnt thru DHCP conflicts with the addressing selected for the LAN side. Internet communications will be disabled until you have changed the LAN side addressing to resolve the problem.".

So my question then is, what am I missing?

- Both the D-Link DIR-655 and the Hitron (CGN3ACSMR) Modem use 192.168.0.1.
- If I disable DHCP in the D-Link DIR-655 Menu nothing appears to happen.
- If I change the IP Address of the D-Link DIR-655 to either 192.168.2.1 or 192.168.1.1 I can no longer access the D-Link DIR-655 without a hard reset.
- If I change the IP Address of the D-Link DIR-655 to 192.168.0.2, although I can still access the login screen, nothing else appears to happen.
- DMZ is an option on the D-Link DIR-655 however I'm not exactly sure how to configure it at this point.

Any Suggestions?

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under the router case.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

You seem to be in a double NAT condition, your modem is a router and the DIR is a router. Single NAT is preferred and recommended...

IF your using the modem is the main host router you can do this to the 655 router:
Turning a router into an AP.\

IF you want to use the DIR as the main host router:
  • If the ISP modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT and How NAT Works. Call the ISP and ask to see if the ISP modem can be bridged. To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged. If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ. Also check the routers DHCP IP address maybe conflicting with the ISP modems IP address of 192.168.0.1. Check to see if this is the same on the ISP modem, and if modem can't be bridged, change the DIR router to 192.168.1.1 or .0.254.
Example of a D-Link router configured for PPPoE with ISP Modem bridged: PPPoE Configuration on a Router

I recommend the 1st suggestion...

Hardware Version: Model DIR-655
Firmware Version: 1.21
Region: North America

Thank you for the quick response, As mentioned before if I change the Dlink DIR-655 from 192.168.0.1 to either 192.168.2.1 or 192.168.1.1 I can no longer access the Router without a hard reset, thus restoring it back to factory defaults. However, I am going to give the 192.168.0.254 a try. As well, both the Modem and the Router use 192.168.0.1.

Ideally I'd like to continue to use the D-Link DIR-655 as a router with all local devices connected to it, with the Netgear WNCE2001 acting more or less like an extended ENet Cable to the Hitron (CGN3ACSMR) Modem, while retaining the modems Wireless Routing capabilities.

How do I bridge connections? What does this mean/do?
There are 2 other laptops connected directly to the Hitron (CGN3ACSMR) Modem as well. That cannot be changed.

If I leave the Modem as is, what is the best option for obtaining a resolution through the Router?

When you change the IP address on the DIR router, to access it's web page you have to use the new IP address you changed to, to access the DIR web page .

You'll need to phone contact your ISP to ask them to see if the modem is bridgeable and if so, they will be able to help you bridge it.

Sounds like using the DIR router in AP mode would be best and easiest for you...

Thanks again for the input. As I've mentioned before, if I change the Routers IP to 192.168.0.2, I can access the Router from the browser. But if I change it to 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1 the Router becomes unrecognized. Its there but if I attempt to use either of those new IP's to access it thru the browser nothing happens. Even on discovery.

I'm going to try changing it to 192.168.0.254 and let you know how that fairs, however I'm thinking AP Mode might be the way to go.
So I'll see what I come up with using the information you've provided and fill you in on the result tomorrow.

Just to update. My Firmware version is 1.21, I'm not sure which 1.21. I see that there are quite a few updates since my last. Should I or Shouldn't I?
ftp://ftp2.dlink.com/PRODUCTS/DIR-655/REVA/DIR-655_REVA_RELEASENOTES_1.37_EN.TXT

As well, I was able to properly determine my HW Version number: A3

Does this help at all?

If you are changing the router's IP to 1.1 or 2.1 make sure you are also changing the DHCP address range to match the .1 or .2  address.  You would change address range to 192.168.1.x to 192.168.1.y.  Then the router will be discoverable.

I Think the DHCP server will change to the new IP address string if the routers IP address is changed...Or is this an older version that doesn't?

You can update if you want to however there isn't any need if your not seeing any wireless issues.

I would get the 655 working as a 2ndary AP first using LAN to LAN configuration then go from there...
The AP Mode would be best for your configuration...
