Just bought "new" (refurb) DIR-835, need CD-ROM
« on: May 21, 2019, 05:20:37 AM »

Yes, I know this router is old. Well, so am I.. :(

Our Belkin F7D7301 v1 is on death's doorstep, and my wife needs it for work, and my son "needs" it for his games. I went to Newegg and found the least expensive router with 802.11n and gigabit Ethernet, that could be configured as an access point. (We live in uber-rural Michigan and our "high"-speed Inet uses an antenna that's aimed at a tower a mile away. They don't say much, but as best as I can figure, it's just a WiFi router that's aimed at their system. They had to "de-configure" the Belkin (which I'd hand-rigged to work with the dialup connection we endured until this outfit showed up).

I know there are beaucoup faster routers available, but this one is already faster than our provider can provide (and is apt to ever provide). So, old or not, it's more than we need, and as my Social Security doesn't provide much "fun" money, corners get cut whenever possible. C'est la merde...

OK, enough small talk.

I downloaded everything I could find for this router, including a firmware update which it may or may not need to have applied. But, I searched the ****ens out of the site and could NOT find that $%$@#% installation disc.

I know I can manually set up the router, but I'd rather have the installer do the first pass (I'll need to go back anyway to switch it into access point mode) -- but, I'd much prefer to be able to just type in "dlinkrouter" instead of the IP address. (I guess I'm spoiled -- with the Belkin I just type "router" and there I go.) I assume that I'll need the install CD to set that up, unless I want to go spelunking in the HOSTS file. I don't.)

Any ideas?

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under the router case.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Just walk thru the setup wizard at 192.168.0.1 in a web browser to set up the router. It the same as using the CD.

Hmm I cannot find the CD software. It is not posted on the support site and it is not on the FTP server.

You do not need the CD. Like furry said, just go to 192.168.0.1 and run the wizard.

I don't remember the 835 having a setup CD. There was a time frame when D-Link cut off in box CDs I believe.  ::)

Yes it was around 2014ish.  The QIG from 2011 shows a CD setup.

AH ok. At any rate, on board setup wizard will get the router setup.  ;)

Just walk thru the setup wizard at 192.168.0.1 in a web browser to set up the router. It the same as using the CD.

My region is Michigan, as mentioned above.

The label says H/W Ver.:A1 F/W Ver.:1.01

I do not think that IP will work for me. This is an unusual config I am straddling. There is NO typical "broadband modem" -- there is what I believe is a WiFi router mounted on a pole they bolted to the top of our yard light. It is aimed at a tower about a mile away. Our highest bandwidth is a tad over two megabytes per second. This is the highest speed available, and costs us about $100 a month. A lot of folks are spoiled by their cheap FAST connections. We do not have that option. It was only about two years ago that we were finally able to get away from dialup modem access.

The "thing" on the pole is made by Ubiquiti -- it is a "LiteBeam 5AC Gen2" according to the login page, for which we do not have access, even though we purchased the thing. It's IP is 192.168.3.1 and when they set things up they completely wiped my router's settings (for which I sweated long and hard getting to work with our dialup modem), and put it into Access Point mode, and set its IP to 192.168.3.2 -- which is where I'll need to put THIS router (after setting IT to Access Point mode).

When I need to go into it to do things like restart it, change the password, and so forth, I'd REALLY like to be able to simply type "dlinkrouter" rather than an IP address, just as I now enter "router" into my browser's address.

THIS is the main reason I want the CD (and I assume that this model was supplied with one, because the manuals walk me through its use!)

If you connect any PC wired or wireless to the 835 you'll get a 192.168.0.something address on the PC, so accessing the routers web page at 192.168.0.1 will be the default access point that you can access the setup wizard that will walk you thru the setup of the router same as the CD would. The CD is no longer available. The setup wizard on the router will help you get it setup.

If you don't think this will work, I would recommend that you have your ISP or someone with router setup knowledge help you with getting the 835 setup with the ISP service.

If the 835 needs to be setup as in AP mode it can support that:
Turning a router into an AP.

I have this same router.

I'm sure I'll be able to set it up. I just want to minimize the PITA factor.

Apparently that is an indication of some personal flaw on my part.

Why they could not simply provide an ISO for that disc is possibly the most effective NEGATIVE advertising imaginable. They provide every other conceivable collection of bits, but that ONE stupid thing is verboten? WHY???

Cost of developing CD Software, testing it and the Mfr'g. Easier to have built in setup wizards then external setup media.

What "cost""? It was already developed! They just opted to not supply it with refurbed routers! When this was originally sold it came with the CD. The only "cost" would be the cost of an entry-level employee making an ISO file of the CD and putting it on the list of already available files for download (manual, firmware, etc.)

We're talking, what, fifteen minutes or so?

Something D-Link chose not to do. Also takes up web space for something not used very often. So again, not needed anymore.

Anyways, does the onboard setup wizard help you get the router going?  ???

Did you try setting up without the CD?

I cannot find the software. It is not on our FTP site, or in my archives. I do not see it in the global database. The CD will not work with Windows 10.

Manual - start with page 13 - ftp://FTP2.DLINK.COM/PRODUCTS/DIR-835/REVA/DIR-835_MANUAL_1.00_EN.PDF

The CD basically does the same thing.

Obviously.

Oh, please, lame argument. It would take up far less space than a day's traffic on this forum. Space is cheap, and the amount it would take is trivial.

I'll know once the caffeine hints my synapses. (My son won't shut up about it. "Is it almost set up? How is your progress? Is your research paying off? Blah blah blah blah blah..."

All I wanted was to be able to type "dlinkrouter" into the bloody address line, argh....

You can type "dlinkrouter.local." into the address bar.

Is your computer in a LAN port on the dlink router? If yes, then open a browser and type "dlinkrouter.local.".

Please answer my questions. We are trying to help but you are not answering if you can connect and run the wizard.
