Protecting Routers from Lightning Strikes
« on: August 15, 2014, 04:11:28 AM »

Hi,

I didn't find an off-topic section so I am posting it here. This is something I am really concerned about.

My ISP provides Internet connection using Ethernet cables. There is no modem required. That cable is directly

connected to the WAN port of my DIR 600L.

Now, some other customers of this ISP told me that routers and NICs were damaged due to lightning strikes.

So whenever I am at home and there is storm I simply disconnect the WAN cable.

But what worries me is the fact that what will happen if I am not at home and there is storm.

Does Dlink manufacture any product which will protect routers from these kind of threats ?

I don't believe there is anything that D-Link Mfrs.

You might check out some power strip Mfrs to see if they might have something to offer, i.e. TrippLite, Intermatic...there maybe others...

You might check out a UPS devcie...Un-interruptible Power Supply

Let us know what you find out...

I searched a lot but unfortunately nobody manufactures ethernet spike protectors in my country.

So the only way is to buy it online. Because all prices are in dollars, item price + shipping charges is becoming almost equal to what I paid for the router ! (Rs1150)

I am thinking to buying this one

http://www.ebay.com/itm/RadioShack-Network-Surge-Protector-10-100-Base-T-LAN-RJ-45-Modular-Jacks-61-2144-/121296292954?pt=US_Surge_Protectors_Power_Strips&hash=item1c3dd28c5a

Edit : Can't buy any of the surge protectors listed in http://www.ebay.com/ coz the COD (Cash on Delivery) option is not available and I never pay in advance while buying something online.

I guess COD is available for only those products which has origins within my country and the Ebay domain for that is http://www.ebay.in/.
