DNS Maintenance
« on: May 20, 2010, 07:40:44 PM »

My DNS 323 blew up in an electrical storm.  Device would not power up.  I took the unit into an authorized service center and they could not fix it.  I will have a replacement next week.  My question is....Will I be able to insert my original 2- 1.5TB drives configured as JBOD into this new device and will it work okay.
Followup question is, can I duplicate each of the JBOD physical drives separately and still have the duplicates work in another JBOD configuration?
My main concern is to save my data.  Secondly, I don't want this to happen again.  (Yes I know I need a surge protector).

That might depend on whether or not the electrical storm also damaged the drives - if the drives are intact, you should be able to insert them into a replacement DNS-323 and move forward.  On the other hand, if either one of the disks is dead, you can probably kiss your data goodbye, even if it is contained entirely on the functional disk - you could try sending it out to a data recovery specialist, but they tend to be quite expensive - it's your data, it's your decision.

How do you plan to "duplicate" them?

In a single word - BACKUP

Now - if I might make a suggestion - being optimistic and assuming that your disks are intact and you do get access to the data simply by plugging them into a new unit - take the time NOW to backup the data to another medium, buy another disk if you must - trust me it'll be cheaper than sending a disk to a recovery specialist - and then get rid of the JBOD configuration, all it's doing for you is increasing the chances of data loss - if either disk in a JBOD configuration fails, you will lose access to the data, evn if the data is stored entirely on the remaining functional disk.

Consider this experience a wakeup call.

RAID1 is for disk redundancy - NOT data backup - don't confuse the two.
