I have the exact same question, let me know if you figure it out.

The product advertises to recording to NAS without leaving computer on.

I have a dd-wrt router where I have attached a USB drive, but no luck in figuring this out.

right now video is only recording if i leave the computer open.

the usb hard drive i connected to a e3000 dd-wrt router.

in the settings of the d-link viewcam software, under storage i try to select the network drive, but it just reverts back to the C: drive or so, when i shutdown the pc, the recording stops.

 ???

it most certainly is possible with a bit of knowledge and hackery

i used to work for wd in a way. and know a bit about their nas products

i have a mybooklive at home
and i have a dcs-932l

how could i have it record motion, pics or video, or both, and record to my nas.

well it has an ftp running on it for one, but this wasnt geek enough of a solution for me.

load optware on the mybooklive, and ipkg add the following packages, motion, vlc, screen, ffmpeg and some others...ill post my notes in a moment.

ffmpeg -r 15 -f mjpeg -i http://username:password@192.168.1.69/image.jpg -vcodec mjpeg -sameq -aspect 4:3 -y /DataVolume/shares/Public/video.mpeg

behold the glory of this command!

so ffmpeg will snap up all the jpegs coming from the camera and dump them to a mpeg file.

but what could control the activation of this command? motion?

To complete the installation, you must edit /opt/etc/motion.conf,
and then run /opt/etc/init.d/S99motion to start motion.

that should get you started on what motion is. basically a deamon will monitor the video stream for motion and record with specified settings upon activation.

the bummer is, whenever you upgrade the firmware on a mybooklive it wipes any custom linux stuff youve done to it, so remember to backup. that now said, ive lost my configs and such over the last couple firmware updates, and now i just have the camera activated on motion to send jpegs to my gmail accounts and still have it linked into the mybooklives ftp though.

so you can indeed have this record on motion, or full time record, until it fills the filesystem(1 2 and 3tb models available).

someone whos into this step in. ill post some of my notes and collected learnings in the next post

here it is, ill add more to it as people request it.

hopefully this pisses someone off and gets some noise made on fixing it. or get me a damn job ;)

resource for mybooklive

http://mybookworld.wikidot.com/mybook-live

get optware on there, and use its package manager to install any linux package already compiled for it, heres a repository for the mybooklive

http://ipkg.nslu2-linux.org/feeds/optware/ds101g/cross/stable/

as i installed vlc it wanted all these others installed. not sure i needed vlc entirely as ffmpeg is the command.

motion is the daemon to watch for video
http://www.lavrsen.dk/foswiki/bin/view/Motion/WebHome

package vlc suggests installing faad2
package vlc suggests installing flac
package vlc suggests installing freetype
package vlc suggests installing fribidi
package vlc suggests installing liba52
package vlc suggests installing libdvbpsi
package vlc suggests installing libdvdnav
package vlc suggests installing libdvdread
package vlc suggests installing libid3tag
package vlc suggests installing libmad
package vlc suggests installing libmpcdec
package vlc suggests installing libmpeg2
package vlc suggests installing libogg
package vlc suggests installing libpng
package vlc suggests installing libshout
package vlc suggests installing libupnp
package vlc suggests installing libvorbis
package vlc suggests installing libxml2
package vlc suggests installing ncursesw
package vlc suggests installing speex
package vlc suggests installing avahi
package vlc suggests installing x264

To complete the installation, you must edit /opt/etc/motion.conf,
and then run /opt/etc/init.d/S99motion to start motion.

ffmpeg -r 15 -f mjpeg -i http://admin:admin@192.168.1.69/image.jpg -vcodec mjpeg -sameq -aspect 4:3 -y /DataVolume/shares/Public/video.mpeg

I don't know about VLC but I did find a way to record from the camera on my Linux box using ffmpeg:

ffmpeg -r 10 -f mjpeg -i http://admin:admin@192.168.1.69/mjpeg.cgi -vcodec mpeg4 -sameq -aspect 4:3 -y /DataVolume/shares/dlink/outfile.m4v

You may need to fiddle with the frame rate a bit to get it just right.  I found 10 fps (-r 10) worked ok for me.

Guys,
This is where is shows recording of 932L camera to NAS is possible.
This from DLink website for 932L camera.

For advanced users that want more out of their camera, the DCS-932L also comes with D-Link D-ViewCam™ management software for Windows PCs. D-ViewCam comes with a host of features including the ability to record directly from the camera to a local hard drive, trigger motion detection, set recording schedules, set e-mail alert notifications, and even support for up to 32 cameras. D-ViewCam also allows you to upload a floor plan of your home or small business and create a realistic layout of where your cameras are located, providing you with better access to your camera. For even greater recording flexibility, D-ViewCam can record video directly to a Network Attached Storage (NAS) device, eliminating the need for a dedicated computer to store video.

I guess this means D-Viewcam is required to set this up.
I wonder, does this means that the D-Viewcam software has to be running for this to work?

Tangi.

In this particular case it does mean you still need a computer with the D-view Cam software installed
and configured to store to your nas unit.  I do this but I map a network drive to the folder on my nas unit.  I have absolutely no problem with getting my motion triggered data to be stored here......

BUT!

I am a newbie here and I have a problem, like I said, I have all this video data but cannot get my
D-View Player to open any of it.  Even when I browse specifically to the cams folder I am interested in!

Can someone please help me?  I have a post just for this but figured, maybe if I post to someone else's post with a suggestion I can get some help instead of just a bunch of views!

thanks all!

ffmpeg -r 10 -f mjpeg -i http://admin:admin@192.168.1.69/mjpeg.cgi -vcodec mpeg4 -sameq -aspect 4:3 -y /DataVolume/shares/dlink/outfile.m4v

Thanks :) I did everything accordingly and it works fine.

Just a few questions:

- Is there any way put date, time and other infos to it?
- It doesn't record on motion but it makes full time record. How do I fix this?
finally and most importantly
- How can get this work without running SSH Client with the computer on?
