Title: DD-WRT
Post by: pjh42 on December 14, 2017, 11:34:29 AM
Has anyone installed DD-WRT on a DIR-890L?

What was your experience?

Thanks.

I was running DD-WRT for several months.   There are many firmwares which do not work properly.  They will load fine but many features will not work.  If you want to install it there is a thread on the DD-WRT forums with a discussion on which firmwares will work.   I am back to D-Links firmware now simply because it is working fine and I don't need all the extra DD-WRT features right now.  I can't remember which DD-WRT firmware I was running but it was stable and everything was working.  I am sure the version is in the thread over there.

Thanks for the feed back. I still have WRT loaded on my 890L. All information is included in the link provided. All versions are working included recent versions.
Users are encouraged to review information on the DD-WRT site and post on there forums as well.

Good Luck.

Right now with the last hacked garbage "anti DD-WRT firmware" from D-Link "1.20" it is impossible to load anything except the stock 1.20 firmware.

I tried several times to get into emergency firmware load page but nothing works, not even 30-30-30 method. Extremely frustrating that this untested garbage firmware is pushed onto us, blocking dd-wrt / any other firmware.

The only reason I was stupid enough to buy D-link routers is for the out of the box dd-wrt capability to fix the broken D-Link firmware problems.

I would review this:

I have WRT loaded on mine. Working great. You just have to downgrade from v1.20 to v1.11 is all. Then apply WRT.

WRT is not broken on the 890L. There was reported WRT FW issues which were documented over on there forum which is there domain. Those issues where fixed. If you need more help and information regarding DD-WRT, you'll need to post there.

Thank you kindly, I have tried over 18 times to downgrade to 1.11 but it refuses to accept this firmware, downloaded again and again it refused to upload and complete the process, IE, Chrome, Firefox, Palemoon, on win 10 / OSX same results. Always stays stuck on 1.20

After firmware upload of 1.11 it ends up on a empty page http://192.168.100.1/fwupload.cgi and 10 minutes later nothing, Emergency firmware mode refuses to open up on 192.168.0.1 / 192.168.1.1 and never shows up, not even as mentioned above with 30/30/30

Any idea if they uploaded garbage firmware versions after 30 Jan 2018 - today vs original last years firmware ?

Using DIR-890L_REVA_FIRMWARE_PATCH_v1.20B01orrignal inside zip file creation date 2017-10-06 possibly 6 Oct 2017 date ?

68 times factory reset, cable unplug up to 30 mins at a time ....

Stood on my head and chanted like a American Indian doing some Spiritual ritual, nothing worked.

Only did not get a priest to remove the demons form this dir-890l + 1.20 firmware :-(

Be sure to fully read the FAQ on Recovery mode. You need to set a static IP address ON a WIRED lan cable connected PC. I use 192.168.0.49.

Best browser to use is IE11 x32 for the Recovery mode. It's the 32bit version of IE. Can be found on Windows 10 as well. It's worked for me. Can try FF ESR x32bit version as well. I was able to revert back to v1.11 on mine then get WRT loaded successfully.

Do not use 30/30/30 as it's not supported on D-Link routers.

Then follow the DD-WRT FAQ I linked you to. It works.

Where you able to get this going?

I just tried installing dd-wrt on a d-link 890L following the instructions at http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=72749.msg292484 (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=72749.msg292484)

I downgraded the FW from 1.2 to 1.11. The 1.11 version is included in the 1.2 zip file found at https://support.dlink.com/ProductInfo.aspx?m=DIR-890L%2fR (https://support.dlink.com/ProductInfo.aspx?m=DIR-890L%2fR)
Every time I uploaded the factory-to-ddwrt.bin I got the error "Firmware Upgrade failed!".
I tried with multiple versions of dd-wrt from 2016, 2017 and 2018 (latest). I used Safari 11.1 with IE11 user agent, tried with FF on mac and even tried from a virtual machine with Win and IE11. Same result each time.
I even upgraded to the original FW 1.20 and tried the upgrade to dd-wrt.
Same result each time.

Any suggestion?

Ok, I don't think the included v.1.11 file will work that with in the v1.20 zip file, so lets try using the stand alone v1.11 from the support site:
https://support.dlink.com/ProductInfo.aspx?m=DIR-890L%2fR (https://support.dlink.com/ProductInfo.aspx?m=DIR-890L%2fR)

I believe this is what I used. You can even go back farther and use the v1.10 version and down grade to it. Then try to apply the factory2WRT.bin file.

Try doing an emergency firmware upload/crash recovery to install the wrt firmware.

See if the DIR-882 instructions work for you - http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=73607.0 (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=73607.0)

Most of the new gen router's firmware (1.20 and up) are encrypted which prevents upgrading/downgrading to an unencrypted firmware. You have to crash recover it.

After installing the FW 1.11 it worked! I was fooled by the dlink support page that listed the v1.11 under "Security Advisement" rather than the "Firmware" dropdown.

I managed to install both factory-to-ddwrt.bin and dir890-webflash.bin but unfortunately, I wasn't able to have the router connect to internet (with the network led always orange).
I used the latest 2008 beta build.

Ya the Internet LED behavior will be different with WRT loaded. Something to ask the WRT devs about. Maybe they can fix that.
Glad you got it loaded though. Enjoy.

Besides the LED behavior, I didn't manage to access to internet at all so far. I'll try again in the next days, maybe with a different build.
Thanks for the suggestions!
