DIR-635 keeps dropping connection
« on: December 05, 2012, 10:58:08 PM »

Goodday,

since my internet provider provided a free modem/router (Cisco EPC3212) a couple of months ago I have been experiencing constant issues with my WIFI-connections using my 1 yr old DIR-635.
Especially after hooking up a NAS (Synology DS 411+II) one month ago, the problems intensified.

The NAS is going strong and is downloading steadily via Ethernet on D-link. No problem there.
Just that WIFI connections keep dropping.

One constant error message on my win7 x64 SP1 laptop (connected through wifi but showed no internet connection), is:
"The default gateway is not available" after runing the WIFI troubleshooter.

I read somewhere that it's important to set-up the Cisco as only a modem and not a modem/router.
So I asked my provider Ziggo (Netherlands) to disable the router-function. Which they did, so now it only acts as a modem.

After doing that the router is still having issues in dropped connections.
Over the last month I did so many set-up changes that I don't know if I've caused the issue or if there are still HW-conflicts.

Can someone help me on how to approach this issue step by step and let me know which set-up changes to make?

This issue is driving me mad.....
Thanks so much

Menno

If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
Double NAT
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.
Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask.

Any cordless house phones?
- yes 2 pcs< Any of them on a 2.4Ghz frequency?

Any other WiFi routers in the area?
- Yes, many -> ~8 pcs<IF this is the case then you need to find a open channel that is not being used and set the 635 to an open channel on the WiFi settings. IF this fails, then you maybe encountering a WiFi congested area that has become over run with other WiFi routers contending for an open channel on 2.4Ghz. You need to look into changing over to 5Ghz frequency. If you do you could just turn OFF the 2.4Ghz radio on the 635 and install a DLink DAP model AP, say a 1522, 1525 or 1533 for 5Ghz radio. Then you could install a DWA-160 or 182 on your PC that would connect to the DAP on 5Ghz.

Let us know how it works out.

Thnx for quick response.
These are my WAN settings:

WAN

Connection Type :DHCP Client
QoS Engine : Inactive
Cable Status :Connected
Network Status :Established
Connection Up Time :0 Day 0 Hour 18 Min 59 Sec

Subnet Mask :255.255.254.0
Default Gateway :84.31.124.1
Primary DNS Server :212.54.40.25
Secondary DNS Server :212.54.35.25

So no 192.168.0.#
I just called my ISP and the Cisco is already in brdige mode (since yesterday)

Any check I can do more before I try DMZ?

just restarted the D-link and now the WAN IP is:

So I guess using DMZ will also not work since WAN is not static.
Not sure what to do now....

Can you still connected wired or wireless to the routers web page when this happens?

I would make sure the ISP can check the ISP Modem to see if there is any issues during this time frame. They should be able to see the logs when this happens. If your on cable, make sure that your not using any T.V. Line splitters as these will lower the singal. Make sure the ISP checks the signal going into the modem.

If all is good here and your seeing wireless disconnect, your issues will be with the 2.4Ghz radios.

FYI, You can remove the MAC and WAN IP address from your post please.

ok removed addresses.
Yes I can still reach dir-635 via web page.

FYI the network is strong since the NAS is working hard to download torrents on high speed.
So I am certain it's a router issue not intrinsic to internet bandwidth.

Also I am not using any splitters... should be OK.

Ok good to know.

Be aware that if your downloading a lot of torrents, this could be the cause. I would adjust your torrents accordingly. Torrents have been known to cause disconnect to to the high bandwidth they seem to like using. I would test your router out with out doing any torrents as well. Turn OFF the Router and stop Torrents and see how just general internet and a wired connection work. Then turn on the WiFi radio and test again. If you notice it's still dropping on WiFi and not wired, then you'll know that your problem area is the 2.4Ghz and probably the surrounding other WiFi radios.

Do I understand correctly that my if WAN IP is not starting with 192.168.0.# (like I have now) the bridge mode is working well?

Any tips you can give on config of D-link?
Since I tweaked so many things (because I was not aware of double NAT-setup)

I am not sure what are standard settings but am reluctant to revert to fact settings so I have to set-up fixed IP addresses all over again....

Do I understand correctly that my if WAN IP is not starting with 192.168.0.# (like I have now) the bridge mode is working well? Yes it should be working well, however depending upon ISP modem connection with ISP and lines in between, could be other problems there. We'll presume thats good for now. How is the 635 set for under Setup/Internet/Manual? I presume DHCP?

Any tips you can give on config of D-link?
Since I tweaked so many things (because I was not aware of double NAT-setup)
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.
WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

I am not sure what are standard settings but am reluctant to revert to fact settings so I have to set-up fixed IP addresses all over again....Are the fixed IP addressed ON the devices or set up as RESERVED addressed ON the router?

Hi FurryNutzz,

A couple of days ago we solved the double NAT.
It appeard to be better then.

After applying your latest router-settings I ran test with and without NAS running, but I am still facing very bad wifi connection.

I even unhooked the wirless telephone, but do not know what to do now.
Could it be the router? I am considering buying a new one since I am at my wits end....
