DIR 655 stopped broadcasting WiFi
« on: September 28, 2016, 01:46:07 PM »

Dear All,

I'd be grateful for any recommendations regarding the following problem:
I am using the Dir 655 router and recently it stopped broadcasting the wireless network. When I access the router settings, status tab Wireless always says "Wireless Radio OFF".
The reset to the Factory settings didn't help, the wifi remains OFF.

The h/w version B1, s/w version 2.00, if it can help.

Thanks and regards.

  • What wireless modes are you using?
  • 2.4Ghz Routers only: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
  • Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear. 13 for EU regions.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • What wireless devices do you have connected?
  • Ensure any devices with WiFi adapter drivers are updated.
  • Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by that maybe causing interferences?

You have shipping FW which is old. You might try upgrading to the most current:

Use IE11 or FF to configure and FW update the router...

Thank you for your reply. I'm located in Malta (Europe).

Currently, the router is used for cooperation of the media system components (Ipad, projector, Blu-ray player, RTI processor, sound system, etc) and isn't connected to the Internet.

I tried to change the various wireless network settings, as you suggested, but it didn't help, the wireless radio remains constantly OFF.

Now, I'll try to update the firmware to see if it can solve the problem.

Thanks and regards.

Another problem: I have downloaded the newest firmware suitable for my router from D Link website ver 2.11 (DIR 655 H/v B1).
When I unzipped it and try to upload it to the router and upgrade it, I get the following message:
The uploaded firmware file may not be correct. You may have uploaded a file that is not intended for this Gateway, or the uploaded file may be corrupted.

If the uploaded file is correct, it is possible that the gateway may be too busy to properly receive it right now. In this case, please try the upload again. It is also possible that you are logged in as a "user" instead of an "admin" - only administrators can upload new firmware.

The Gateway will not be reprogrammed.

I also tried to download firmware and upgrade router using both the IE and FF. The result is the same - fail.

Any suggestions?

Thanks, this firmware file worked well, although I had the same firmware version before (2.09)

The problem with Wireless radio OFF remains after 'upgrading' as well:(

Does it mean that the router is faulty? It worked for about 3-4 years

Your initial post mentioned you had v2.00.

Ok, if you did a re-load of the FW and the wireless has not come back ON, the radio could be bad. If the router itself and the LAN wired portion of the router is working, a suggestion for you would be to disable the radio on the 655 to make sure it's fully OFF, then connect up either a DAP model wireless unit to the back of the 655 or find you a 2nd hand used router that you could turn into a wired LAN to LAN AP and connect to the back of the 655. The 655 seems to be still good accept for the wireless radio. Connecting up a DAP or a DIR model running AP mode would be a alternative solution if you want to keep the 655 as your main host router.

Sorry for misunderstanding. Initially, I checked the firmware version on the label on the router's back. Later, when I accessed the web interface, I noticed that the actual version of the firmware is 2.09.

OK, it's a pity, but after all the trials it looks like the radio is faulty:(

Thanks a lot for your recommendations.
