I"m deleting old backups - probably around 100,000 files - my guess is its going to take many hours at at least 1 second per files.

Doing the delete from WIn7 desktop using an Explore type utility 'Directory Opus'

If I do it with a DOS ccmand DEL - it goes much much faster.

I recommend starting with a few files at first at see how long it takes then maybe increase how many you delete at once. Use small chunks of files.

When I deleted about 20,000 files one evening I eventually went to bed and it finished sometime overnight.  Yes, a long time.

First thing check if you have in fact gained any free space.

I suspect that you used the normal windows delete to delete the files and the long time was windows moving them to the recycle bin and renaming them.  As one of our tests we deleted 55,000 small files to give us a benchmark if clients asked.  The delete took just under the hour which we considered acceptable, we also regained all the space on the RAID 1 array.

As mdg has found using DOS delete is much faster because it only marks the files as deleted - it marks the space as being available.  I suspect the DOS RD might be faster but we have not tested that.

Thanks for the confirmation. Thankfully I don't need to do this often. I was moving my backup target to another DNS NAS and repurposng this one - needed to free up space.
