DIR-815 won't stream
« on: December 08, 2011, 05:52:39 AM »

815 needs its own huh..

My old router bit the dust and i purchased an 815 to replace it. Set up was easy and i managed to get online easily enough, reopened ports for my various games and moved on. I managed to play online throughout the evening and didn't notice any issues.
However, my brother claims that his videos would stop loading midway or just stop playing. He tested this on several sites and anything like tinychat and all that stuff would work for a point and then drop entirely. I tried this on every computer connected and found the same issue. Any Youtube video will buffer quickly until a random point and it'll stop the streaming there. If you click ahead, it will continue buffering, often playing through without problems or stopping again in a similar fashion.

I have no idea what causes this.. Every time ive tried to stream something, its dropped at some point. I'm not the most IT savy person, but i've followed what i can on this website and havent had any success.. I don't know what else to try.

I should also note that this was never a problem with my old router, as far as the ISP is concerned, the settings remain the same. And i don't understand why i can play an online game without dropping, yet cannot watch a full 3 minute youtube video. (Oh, and it's not the flash players... I updated all of them and they were working just yesterday on the old router)

EDIT - I should also mention, we're both currently wired to the router. The wireless is off.

Any help would be appreciated. I can provide any other details, if i can locate them.

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router? Stand alone

OK so it looks like they didn't add TCP and UDP for SPI for this model.

Test the router out by turning off SPI, Save the setting and reboot the router.
Have you set up the other options I mentioned?

Keep us posted.

Yep, i did everything else you mentioned and turned SPI off as well. Still noticing a sudden halt in anything im streaming. I've been keeping an eye on the led lights too as it happens. I've noticed it go orange a couple of times, at these points it dropped entirely. But during the mediastreaming it just remains green.

EDIT - I've been running the same pc through just the modem today to try and see whether its my ISP or the computers themselves. However, ive encountered no issues. All of the issues have vanished without the router. So i'm pretty sure its the configuration of the router.

Ok, thats a great test with out the router.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer.

Thanks for the tips. I'm not quite sure what teamviewer is, but if it's helpful, i'll look into it.

After having nice internet speeds without dropouts on the modem alone, i plugged in my router again and restored it to defaults, got it all going and set up again. Same damn issue, especially streaming videos, it will stop at a random point. Whilst using the modem alone, i didn't have this issue.
Tonight i set it up to ping indefinitely so i can see if it's actually dropping out, or whether its something else doing it (router setting is the only real possibility).

EDIT - The pings eventually 'request timed out' indefinitely, however, the internet was still functioning at this point. I also played a video which stopped buffering soon after the pings dropped. From what i can tell, after a short duration of being idle, the router is cutting off my internet or something... It's never been a problem whilst i played a video game and both cmd and youtube in this case were unattended when it stopped.. Any idea if there is a setting that would dictate this and if so where it would be?

I had someone come and look at it and they confirmed that the settings were correct and we still had the issue. I've decided i'm just going to take it back and get a new one, it's become more trouble then it's worth.

Thanks so much for the help anyway man
