IP Address 192.168.0.100?
« on: October 21, 2014, 11:38:21 AM »

Is this address typically required by the router for anything?  (I suspect this is a very ignorant question.)  My puzzle is this:
0) The router's IP address is 192.168.0.1.
1) I have enabled the DHCP server and set the address range to 100-114.  (This may be my fundamental mistake.)
2) I have a network printer set to a **manual** IP address of 192.168.0.101.
3) I have assigned DHCP reservations for 192.168.0.102-114 to accommodate all my other devices that may or may not be connected.
4) I have also turned on MAC filtering and listed all of the MAC addresses that are allowed to connect (**including** the LAN printer).  All of them **except** the printer have corresponding DHCP reservations.  (This might be another mistake.)
5) When I look at Status/Internet Sessions, I see one listed for 192.168.0.100, but I cannot immediately tell what device this is, nor how it is connecting to the router.  Here's an example with that listing expanded:

IP   TCP Count   UDP Count
192.168.0.109   2   3
192.168.0.107   12   0
192.168.0.100   7   0
Protocol   NAT   Internet   State   Dir   Time Out
TCP   54886   72.21.194.114:443   EST    OUT   910
36148   72.21.194.106:80   EST    OUT   847
51198   176.32.98.210:443   EST    OUT   872
55740   205.251.243.105:80   EST    OUT   858
33063   205.251.242.54:80   EST    OUT   867
44216   176.32.100.195:80   EST    OUT   850
48749   176.32.98.108:443   EST    OUT   877
192.168.0.110   3   0

So my specific questions are:
A) Should I have set the DHCP address range to 102-114 (or to 101-114, allowing for the manually configured printer)?
B) In the latter case should I have assigned the printer a DHCP reservation, even though its address is manually set?
C) What device is responsible for the Internet Session reported at 192.168.0.100?  Is it a potential risk?

Thanks in advance for any clarification. -- jclarkw

You need to find out what on your LAN side is connecting at .100. Look at the Status/Device Info or Status/Wireless Status or the Setup/Networking page to see what device is using .100 and compare with the devices MAC address. Be sure it's nothing coming in from the out side wireless like a neighbor.

I recommend using default DHCP IP address pool of .100 thru .199.
Don't use static IP addressing on any device with in the .100 thru .199 range. You can set static IP addresses ON devices out side the DHCP pool, .0.2 thru .99 or .200 thru .254. I recommend setting static IPs on devices like NAS, Printers, controllers or phones, devices that don't need much Internet or router management.

I personally don't use Mac Filtering as some people can work around that. Takes some doing on there part however for home use, there really isn't a lot of need unless you suspect connection abuse by someone in the house or someone from outside.

OPS! -- The .100 listing under Status/Internet Sessions is gone now.  But I can report that it was not listed under Status/Device Info at the time of the previous observation.  The Status/Wireless Status listing (on my router, at least) has never reliably reported IP addresses, although all MAC addresses listed there were kosher.  Maybe this .100 listing was a hold-over from my very recent connection of a new device (procedure: turn off MAC filtering, connect device -- I think it went initially to .100 -- find out its MAC address from Status/Device Info and enter that in the MAC filter list, then assign the device a DHCP reservation and turn MAC filtering back on)?  I guess I will have to watch for this again after re-booting the router...

I recommend using default DHCP IP address pool of .100 thru .199.

So, since the printer is currently set to static address .101, can't I just change the DHCP address range to 102-114 to prevent anything connecting to .100 while at the same time not having the DHCP range overlap the printer's static address?  (I had narrowed the default DHCP pool specifically to prevent more devices from connecting than those with reservations, although I guess if one of the reservations isn't currently connected, that still leaves a vacancy for an unauthorized device, making this artifice relatively ineffective...) -- jclarkw

You like to stick as close as possible to the default settings, is that it?  Something about all the options never being fully tested? -- jclarkw

NO, just preference is all. I actually have used a different IP address string not related to 192.168.0.# and it works. It's up to you how to run your router. The DHCP range can be adjusted to your liking and needs.

Enjoy. Maybe the future will hold something new in a router for you:
