Author Topic: QoS does nothing if your upload is greater than 2M? Skype problems  (Read 5067 times)

Is this true that QoS does nothing if your upload is greater than 2M?  I thought it still worked, just couldn't use auto setting.  With my DGL-4500 I could manually enter speeds greater than 2M and it worked.

Right now things seem to work for the most part, having minor connection quality issue with an MMO but that just may be that game today.  The only real problem is Skype.  I tested it using my computer (wired 1g) to my laptop (wireless 2.4/5g) and my wired computer will quickly start telling me my connect is poor and eventually drop video all together. The wired computer not the wireless, strange.  I should be able to send a 1080p vid to my laptop and receive 720p from my laptop with no problem.  I'm not sure why the router seems to be causing this issue since both systems are local.  I'm guessing Skype loops over the net anyway.  But with the DGL-4500 installed this problem doesn't happen.  I've verified that my old 4500 settings match up with the DIR-857.  And if I let it run long enough the 857 will no longer bring up the sign on page.  Internet connection seems to still work.  All my wired network comps/devices are connected to a DGS-1100-16 Smart Switch.  Only wireless is handled by the 857.  And if Skype is looping over the net then QoS is a must have for proper performance.

Test with QoS and Traffic Shaping turned off.
Test with SPI disabled as a temp test.

Is WMM Enable ON or OFF?

What wireless band is the LT connected when Skype is used? 2.4 or 5Ghz?

Skype does need Internet connectivity since it's services are on the Internet.
What is your ISP speed up and down that you pay for?

Connection Delays, packet errors in online games and several times I had the router decide not display any pages, just browsing and not changing anything, until I rebooted it.  As for QoS, I turned off everything, no change, then enabled it with max 2M upload.  Connection delays were cut in half but online games still having connection quality errors.  No more testing is necessary, when you can't get into the router interface then something is definitely wrong with it.  Went back to my 4500 and everything runs perfectly again.  I'm going to RMA this unit.

Has the router been updated to v1.03?
If you updated did you use IE or Chrome to update FW?
If you updated FW, was a factory reset performed before and after sending the FW file then set up the router from scratch?

What is your ISP speed up and down that you pay for?

Let us know if you'd like someone to review the router settings with you using teamviewer.

Yes to all, net speeds 30m/4m with 100m modem-to-router connection as advertised.  42/4.2 with 1g modem-to-router connection.  Have to say, if HD Fuel doesn't work if your upload is greater than 2M then this router servers no purpose.

You may want to review this and consider one of these routers maybe as an alternative:
