65.0Mbps???
« on: December 18, 2009, 11:39:33 AM »

Hello, I am new here and I am so-so tech wise.  I just got the D-Link DIR 655 router and I am finding that my connection speed is rather low at 65.0 Mbps on my wireless MSI Laptop.  I have Windows7 with a network card that says 802.11bgn 1T1R Mini Card Wireless Adapter.  Shouldn't I be running at 130 Mbps at least?  I have cable internet (Time Warner Road Runner).  Thanks.

If you're (too) far away or there are walls/obstacles you will not get 130 ofcourse. The basic principles of wireless (any wireless device for that matter)/. So describe your environment in order to assess the likelyhood of getting 130 mbps.

Hi Eddie, thanks for your reply.  I placed the laptop in the same room where the router is at and the value of 65.0 Mbps didn't change.  I was only 2-3' away from the router.  Is there a setting on the router or laptop that I should do to make it run faster?  The bandwidth is set at 20 MHz if that means anything.  Thanks.

If I were you I would monitor that reading of 65 Mbps while you're downloading a file or something like that.  I say this because that reading can fluctuate from time to time while you're browsing.  If it remains the same even while downloading a file from somewhere, I would look into the "Advanced Settings" of your wireless adaptor and see if you can possibly make changes there to help bring up your Mbps.

You could check out the manual of course, that's what it is there for...
Or just go the wireless network page under setup. Does sound logical, doesn't it  ;)

Hello. I am not sure whether i am on the right forum.

My router is a DSL - 2680 Broad Band ADSL + Router.

I know nothing about router speeds. I am a novice.

My router speed is 65.0 mbps. It's a not a wireless N router. From what i can see from various internet searches (such as this one), 65.00 mbps would be slow for an N router.

I was wondering if that speed is fine for mine?

My BB connection seems fine, as does my wireless connection and signal strength (i use a USB wireless adaptor, and the router is 1 floor down); BB speed and wireless speed seem fine too, so maybe i shouldn't look for problems where there probably isn't any. I am just curious.

Also, off topic, i am unable to bitTorrent movies. Again, done some internet searches, don't understand the techno babble, overwhelmed with info, just keep reading that i need to forward ports (what ever that means). Can anyone help here too?

Sorry if i'm on the wrong forum,  ::) but help and advice from anyone who understands my query would be appreciated.

Thank's.  :)

It should be set at 40.

Looks like your set up just fine. If your seeing 65Mb connection speeds, say using speedtest.net then your working great man. Wireless speeds differ from wires speeds. If your wireless, the connection speed depends on what the router or WiFi supports. N connection speeds are around 130Mb at 2.4Ghz. 270-300 if the router and WiFi support 5Ghz. Actual file xfers speeds will not be the same and will be much lower. Again, these are connection speeds, not data xfer speeds.

Thanks. I mean, i wasn't even sure what 65.mb was. I knew it was something to do with speed. But what speed? Broadband Spped? Wireless speed?  :o ::) :P Ofcourse, it's the wireless connection speed.  ;D :P When I hover my mouse arrow above the wireless icon, Status: Connected. Signal Strength: Excellant. Speed: 65.0 mb. Didn't think there was a problem, everything is working fine, just curious. Thanks for your reply  ;)
