My Cisco E3000 home router turned 5 years old last week so I decided to buy a new router instead of upgrading my Cable Modem. I looked at professional reviews and it pointed me to the D-Link AC3200 DIR-890L. So I bought one.

H/W Ver A1 F/W Ver 1.03

I installed it. It connects to my Cable Modem Comcast Arris CM820. Created a 2.4 Ghz SSID and a 5.0Ghz SSID (different names and different from the single SSID from the E3000).  Security is WPA Personal. Using all other defaults.., 802.11 Mode, Channel, Power, Width. I started changing all the connected devices to connect to the new 2.4Ghz SSID or the 5.0 GHZ if they supported it.

Great connectivity and throughput for all devices EXCEPT for our 2 Smartphones, both Android devices. One is a Galaxy S5, the other is a Galaxy S6.  All apps (Facebook, Chrome, Safari, eMail, Twitter, etc.) on both phones load SLOW or timeout.  Our phones are consistently slow when accessing the Internet. Throughput is way faster when we turn WiFi off on the phones.  No issues with any other devices throughout the house and Garage.

Other devices in home include iPad, 2 laptops running Windows 8.1 and Windows 7, DirecTV, Sony Blu-Ray, Chamberlain Garage Door Status Adapter, Trane Thermostat, PC. And HP Printer. I also have a thumb drive installed in the USB port as well as a WD Storage Device attached to the DIR-890L.

Troubleshooting:
I saw on some support blogs where changing Channels might help. I used WiFi Analyzer to determine better channels (less interference from others I suppose). That didn’t help. I changed Modes… no help. Channel width changes… no help… Etc.

I unplugged DIR-890L and put my old router back in play and the Phones were back to normal. Put DIR-890L back in play, same slowness on Phones. Each time I powered off Cable Modem before continuing.

I added the phones to the HIGHEST and HIGH sections of QoS Engine. That did not help.

I tried adding the phones to the GUEST network except the router seemed to continually re-boot itself making my entire WiFi Network unusable. I stopped working down this avenue early on.

Side-by-Side tests (same exact location in house) between a phone and a laptop show the dramatic differences in throughput/performance.

Help!!  I really don’t want to return this router.

Link>Welcome!

  • What region are you located?
  • For routers with Smart Connect Technology , try disabling this feature and test. Under Wireless.

If you temporarily disable WPA security on the router, do the phones exhibit the same problem? Re-enable WPA after testing.

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

Zip Code 60102 Algonquin, IL outside of Chicago

Smart Connect is disabled.

Router is in the open and I have Max bars on the phones in all locations in the house.

You are now behind on FW updates, I recommend following the >FW Update Process and update to the recent security release: http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=62502.0

I recommend doing the factory reset, upload the FW file, factory reset once more then setup from scratch and test the phone out first. Don't apply any saved config files.

I will try that as soon as I can... Need WiFi now so will do at off hours or the weekend.  Will let you know. If I install 1.06 and then do a Factory Reset, that doesn't get rid of that update does it?  Also, should I test the Phones using  the Factory Installed SSID or Config my SSIDs before testing?

No, factory reset only clears any configurations and ensures you are starting from a clean slate. Test the phones with a custom SSID name and leave SmartConnect enabled then test. Then test with SC disabled and see.

OK, I got antsy so I followed the following procedures:

Factory Reset
Upload of 1.06
Successful Install of 1.06
Factory Reset
Added a Custom SSID w/Smart Connect
Side-by-Side comparison of Web Page loading Laptop vs. Smartphone right next to Dir-890L.. phone SLOW.. for instance, a 1-2 second load of a webpage on laptop and 1 minute for phone to load the same page. Turned WiFi off phone, same load was comparable.
Turned Smart Connect off
Same tests, same result
Another issue surfaced though, as I continued to customize and change my HP Printer to Static IP, I get an error message that says the "IP address cannot be the same."  HP was 192.168.0.149 and that's where I want it. ??

So if you turned off the WiFi on the phone and used it's cell service and the load time was slow there for web pages, then this would point to a phone/service issue...
I presume you are using the latest phone OS?
Try setting single mode G on 2.4ghz and single mode N on 5Ghz and test.

I recommend if you use static IPs or what a static IP for any devices, you need to apply them out side of the default DCHP IP address pool and it's recommended to set up any Static IP address ON the printer itself. Most HP printers have web page to manage and configure the printer. I have mine set for .14 as my model printer is a HP P2014n.

Went you set a reservation on the router for a device, if the device already has an IP address that you desire to have, then just enable the reservation, then select Save is all. You don't have to re-type in the IP address as I believe this causes the error message. I've seen this before myself.

You misunderstood my comment. I turned WiFi off on the phone and used Cell Service yes but the performance was now comparable to my laptop connected through the DIR-890L Router... FAST.

OK, I will configure the HP Printer Static IP address outside of D-LINK UI, but I think it worked before I upgraded to 1.06.

So, my next test would be to configure the 802.11 Mode for both 2.4Ghz and 5.0Ghz?  I can do N only on 5.0Ghz but the only options in the UI for 2.4Ghz is N, G/N, or B/G/N.

Ya after re-reading what you said I reconsidered...

What radios are the phones connected to when this happens? Both radios?

Try single N on both radios. Test with WPA2 enabled then Turn off WiFi security. Post your results please.

OK, I followed the process below but the Phone were still slow when accessing the Internet during every step. I tried various apps (email, Facebook, etc...) for each test and compared it side-by-side with the laptop connected to the same Radio. BTW, the phones are slow for both 2.4Ghz and 5.0Ghz.

Switched to N only on both Radios.
Switched off WiFi Security for both Radios.
Back to Original configurations. Security back on and all modes available.  All my other devices are up and working normally.

Any other suggestions?

What OS version is on these phones?

These are the only devices to exhibit this issue?

I'm going to have someone review this thread. Please be patient.

Android Version 5.0.2 on the Galaxy S6. My wife is not home so I don't have her version number.

These are the only devices exhibiting real slow Internet access... includes iPad, Windows laptops and PCs, DirecTV, etc....

I am patient. I want to keep this router and our fallback is to turn off WiFi on the phones when we're home.

Good Luck!!!

I assume your connected to the 5ghz on the 890L, if so, on the 5ghz-1 drop it to the lowest channel. Then on your android phones, I would clear ALL memory of previous E3000 router connections and then reboot each phone. When the phone restarts, find 5ghz-1 and connect to it .

Let us know how it works ;D

I have been trying both 2.4Ghz and 5.0Ghz.. Both are slow for the phones.

I tried what you asked, Channel 36 for 5.0Ghz radio, forgot all WiFi Networks, re-booted, connected to 5.0Ghz and it was still slow.

I then added a secondary 5.0Ghz radio that only my phone would recognize and it was still slow.

All other online devices working as advertised.
