Title: FLAC / uPnP / Popcorn Hour ... not working
Post by: Giom on December 08, 2009, 10:09:30 AM
Hello guys

I own a Popcorn Hour C-200 and would like to access my FLAC and mp3 music stored on my DNS-323 through uPnP protocol. But DNS-323 seems to index only MP3 files. I cannot see any of my FLAC music !
So, here are my questions :
Does any of you have the uPnP working with FLAC files ?
Does any of you own a Popcorn Hour and encounter the same issue ?
And finally, would anyone have a solution / explanation for my problem here ?

Thanks in advance

... using firmware 1.08 Beta 8 !

which protocol are you using to access the 323?

(i have a hdx 1000 and a 323, so i'll test it tonight)

What do you mean by "which protocol" ? Are there many different uPnP protocol versions ?

I just enable uPnP Server on my DNS-323 and set the right folder. And finally, wait for the DNS-323 to refresh its library. Then I start up my Popcorn Hour and browse from it the uPnP library of my DNS-323. But unfortunately, only mp3 tracks show up. My popcorn Hour does not see any FLAC tracks !

Let me know how it goes on your side.

you can use different network protocols to connect to the 323. the file formats available are different depending on which is used, as is the amount of bandwidth available.

you could be connecting through
smb
nfs
https
etc

knowing which of these you are using is crucial.

are you a member of the NMT forums?

k. it works for me.

make sure you arent using the 'movie' icon, but are browsing using the 'music' icon. each will only show it's valid file types.

Today, I restored my DNS-323 to Factory Default Settings. And then, after reapplying my own settings, I enabled the uPnP AV Server on my DNS-323 again. But still no luck ! I can see mp3 tracks on my Popcorn Hour but no FLAC tracks :-(
As far as I know I don't have the choice to choose between different uPnP protocols either on my DNS-323 nor on my Popcorn Hour.
Furthermore, I tried to share only one FLAC album to make it simpler to analyze. And I actually noticed that my FLAC tracks are actually seen but are NOT indexed by tags (artists, albums...). They are all accessible via the 'Other' tag, which is useless of course. AND if I play one FLAC track after browsing to it via the 'Other' tag then nothing happens ! My Popcorn Hour won't play it, whereas it plays it very well when I access it directly from network browser of the Popcorn (not the uPnP protocol).
So, I don't know what to do next :-(
Do you think it is an issue on the DNS-323 side or on the Popcorn Hour side ?
Do you confirm me that your own FLAC tracks get properly indexed and seen by tags (articts, albums...) ?
I tried accessing my DNS-323 uPnP from my Archos 605 but it behaved exactly the same way than my Popcorn Hour does.

as i posted above, you have the ways i've listed as options for connecting.

how are you browsing to the 323?
is it set up as an automount?
have you tried setting it up as a SMB or NFS connection?
what do you have setup on the PCH as network shares?
are you running the PCH internal apps?

have you read the popcorn hour wiki?

I can play FLAC files on the PCH C-200 through SMB (DNS 323)

When I try and play using uPnP, they do not play (they show up when I look at it using 'by folder')

The DNS-323 doesn't give us any options under "uPnP AV Server"
and once the uPnP is enabled on my DNS-323, a link simply appears on my Popcorn Hour from wich I can browse my DNS-323 uPnP library. The PCH does not provide any options either.
I guess that's why it is called Universal Plug & Play. No options to set !

Network shares are different than UPnP. its is a direct access to the files. And I have actually set a few SMB network shares on my PCH from which I can access and read my FLAC files with no problem.

I am not running any internal apps on my Popcorn nor on my DNS-323 actually. Should I ?

louisw, it seems like your DNS-323/PCH C-200 behave exactly the same way than mine.

Hope we'll find a way out here.
Meanwhile, i'd like to thank you for your time and help.

Confirmed, none of my (over) 2000 FLAC files' tags are read by the D-Link uPnP software. They all appear in the "Other" category. Please fix :)

My WD Live TV media player also will not display my FLAC files on my D-Link DNS-323 by genre, album, artist, etc.  It puts all the FLAC files under "Other" in alphabetical order (all 10,000 of them), and thus makes access to the files grossly inconvenient.  And yet, D-Link says the DNS-323 supports FLAC files.  Not true!  It will sort "some" MP3 files.

Llink claims flac support.

I haven't tested, but so far it's worked perfect with all other a/v types I've tried.

The UPnP AV media server does support FLAC. The issue you are seeing is that not all the ID3 tag information is provided via UPnP. The devices are only able to see the ID3 tag Title Name. This is why they are not organized my album or artist and shown under other just showing the Title name. This is the same for all files accessed via the UPnP AV media server.
