Using an external HD w DIR-655 A4 FW1.2
« on: September 25, 2010, 11:29:01 AM »

I have a DIR-655 (HW: A4/FW: 1.2) and I"m trying to get a sense of what my options are for connecting an external hardrive to it for network storage. The HD would be either a Maxtor OneTouch USB or a Western Digital Dual-Option Media Center, both of which have their own power source, if that matter. I don't mind it being available to one connection at a time since I'd mostly be using this for occasional backups.

My impressions from exploring this and other forums are that
1) The only way to do this on the DIR-655 is to use SharePort.
2) The current version of SharePort 3.0 has a lot of problems and therefore is risky to enable.
3) Once you upgrade the FW to v1.3 you can't go back to v1.2.

Are these impressions correct?

Also, putting SharePort aside, is it still risky to upgrade to v1.3?

I've found this router decent so far--though I must say I'm feeling like a bit of a sucker since the main reason I bought this was its alleged USB capabilities--but I obviously don't want to brick it while experimenting, either.

What are my options? Have people just given up on connecting HDs?

Thanks.

No, I've been using it succesfully and error free for two years now.

Should be no reason to do so since 1.2x version is really the worst available

Thanks for sharing your experiences, EZ.

:o??!!?
Of course this is why some users have decided to risk the Russian workaround to regress to the stability of 1.21, right?  ::)

Just have a look in the boards older posts about 1.21. If you really want reliablility and stability you regress to 1.11 and nothing else. The first possible way back to the older SDK was 1.21, so I doubt that 1.21 was the choice because of stability and reliability.
