WakeOnLan Does not work [after time]
« on: June 13, 2011, 01:32:11 AM »

Prior threads on here complain about WOL (WakeOnLan) on wireless interface, but same is true with wired interface.
Have done extensive testing, and WOL will work ONLY for a period of time when the WOL packet comes from Internet (WAN Interface).

Would assume it is same problem as prior poster experience with Wireless: the router does not allow port-forwarding to multicast address, only to a specific IP address, and, even if the IP address is reserved for a particular MAC/network device, the router's ARP table apparently doesn't track this after some period of time when the PC is powered down. So, the magic packet WOL doesn't get delivered.

A device on the local net can send the magic packet to the multicast address (typically x.x.x.255), and wake the target. But, no configuration on the router provides for the delivery of the magic packet from the WAN interface - except for a [short] period of time right after the device is powered off.

This is MAJOR flaw in DIR601.
Same behavior with both firmware releases. 1.01NA and 1.02NA

Guess I'll try DD-WRT now.
My opinion of D-Link just dropped many notches.
Especially since their firmware has some documentation/appears to support WOL, but clearly they've dropped the ball on this!

Does this router support WoL? I presume if it does then could be an issue with FW, however if it doesn't then it's working as designed. Not all routers support WoL.
You can give the DGL-4500 forum a try and see if that WoL guide works there, theres another one I think in the 655 forum however you'll need to do a search for it.
