Title: Noise and Firmware upgrade
Post by: sw12345 on August 20, 2013, 02:44:49 PM
Hi Everyone,

I have a DNS-343 with 4 2TB disks. Recently, I have noticed a problem with the fan and noise. Previously, the noise from the fan (at lease I think it's from the fan) is loud rarely and I can only hear if once a while (probably once a day) - anyway, it's unnoticeable. Recently, the noise is constantly loud even it's not being used.

Have anyone experienced the same problem? if yes, any solution? I checked the status and everything is fine.

I have noticed that my firmware version is very low. I don't remember the exact number, but something like 1.0 or 1.1. I have never upgraded it. So I like to upgrade it.

Will the upgrade keep all raid configuration and all other configuration? I don't want to lose anything in my storage. I know, generally, it should not, but like to confirm with people who has done that already.

Thanks in advance.

Steven

If the fan noise is only recently picking up with no changes to your DNS-343, there's a high probability that the fan is going bad.

As far as firmware upgrades are concerned, upgrading the firmware should not impact your current HDD configuration or data. Also not that you should always maintain a backup of your critical data prior to performing any configuration change to your DNS-343, particularly a firmware upgrade.

That said, do you have a good reason for upgrading your firmware? Please see the following sticky post from our FAQ board: DNS ShareCenter - Should I Upload the Latest Firmware? (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=50700.0).

Also carefully read the notes at the end of the following sticky post: DNS ShareCenter - Upgrading ShareCenter Firmware (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=49100.0).

Thanks, JavaLawyer!

I have reviewed the sticky post "DNS ShareCenter - Upgrading ShareCenter Firmware" before. I am aware of the risk, which is why I did not want to do it and still hesitate.

do you happen to know the specs of the fan? I like to have it replaced.

Thanks,
Steven

The first thing you should do is power down the DNS-343 and clean the fans, dirt/dust on the fan blades can potentially cause noise if the blades get out of balance.  I believe there are two 40mm fans in the unit.

I just added the following sticky post to the ShareCenter FAQ board: DNS ShareCenter - My ShareCenter Fan is Noisy - Fan Maintenance and Cleaning (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=55315.0)

Thank you very much, JavaLawyer!

I will give it a try this week and see if my problem goes away  ;D

Glad to help. Please post back after you've given this a shot.

If the fan is in fact bad, you should be able to replace. It's been a while since I opened the case to my DNS-343s, so I don't recall whether the fan leads use a standard plug or are soldered to the motherboard.
