1.08b5 & the fan won't stop
« on: September 13, 2009, 08:20:27 PM »

As the subject says, I just installed the 1.08b5 firmware and now the fan won't stop going. Under Tools->Power Management->Fan Control I have the "Auto" option chosen. Any ideas?

Thanks

When I changed mine to Auto:  Off/Low/High, it just seemed to stick on High, but when I changed the setting to Auto:  Low/High, it works; it correctly changes the fan speed periodically between Low and High.

Maybe it'll be fixed in the final version of FW 1.08?

I'm currently using the Auto high/low setting, and most of the time I don't hear the fan, though when I check I can see it's running.

I had the same problem when I installed 1.08b5. I just set it to auto low/high... then reset it to auto off/low/high and it worked perfectly. FWIW, I have NO problems with 1.08b5.

Just bought my second DNS-323 yesterday and experience the same when I uploaded 1.08b5.  I did the same exercise as bripab007 and that fixed it.

What is the temperature of the unit? And be sure to reset the unit to factory defaults from the UI after updating the firmware.

When I moved to new FW versions, I typically do a "reset to defaults" before AND after the FW flash.

The reported temp of my unit is typically low- to mid-40's celsius.

Disable APKG packages (if you have any installed). My unit doesn't hibernate if BitTorrent or NoIP DDNS APKG modules are active (service started).

It's not a hibernation issue, it's a fan speed issue.

If you set it to Auto: Off/Low/High, the fan seems to stick on High, no matter the temp, no matter the hibernation state of the drives.  My desktop is right next to the unit, so I can hear when the drives go to sleep or wake from sleep (also noted by the lethargic response on a network share as they first come out of hibernate).

If you set it to Auto:  Low/High, you can hear the fan speed change as it gets cooler or hotter.

I could never get the Auto (off/low/high) to work properly, but the high/low setting appears to work and the unit is pretty quiet unless it's working hard.

I installed the 1.08 beta last night and noticed the same behavior (fan permanently on high) until I reset to factory defaults and rebooted.

Now I'm using the Auto/Low/High setting, and the fan is behaving normally.

On mine, I just set it to 'Low/High', and saved, then reset it back to 'Off, Low, High' and re-saved, and that made the fan work as normal again. It now stays off most of the time as it had before in previous non-beta versions

Dito.

Resetting to defaults with the button on the back also works.
