Knowing how simple it is to write quick and dirty scripts to do the job, could the functionality be added as an external package of some sort?

Throwing my hat in for this request as well. Makes sense to be able to dump a mirrored copy of my raid1 to a drive connected directly to the usbport on the back. Having said option built in to be able to schedule it (and for it to just handle delta changes instead of full copies to save time as well) would all be nice too. No desire to do this over shareport, as it should be able to back itself up, no need for an external computer.

Thanks!

If you have to use an external computer, might as well connect the USB drive to that computer, must faster. :D

Same thing with Shareport here - it works well with current FW and Win7-64. I tested it with a multifunction printer, but the special behaviour of MFP's (acting as 3 or more several devices) gives a little trouble, so I decided to use (W-) LAN.

FunPlug can also automatically mount a USB device, at least at boot-up. Problem is the "unmount" - there's no "Remove portable devices" feature, so you have to shut down the NAS.

But, it would be a serious feature to use the USB feature for download or streaming storage. It's silent, needs nearly zero energy and produces no heat.

So - add my vote FOR implementing USB storage support :) .

If I'm not mistaken, it's a feature of the DNS-343, which also has rsync.
For these reasons I don't think this feature will ever make it to the DNS-323.

I'll add my vote for the USB port to support an external drive or a Flashdrive.  Most printers these days are already network ready.

Add my vote also, I agree using the USB port for an external USB drive would be a big plus! Also why not up grade the Linux kernel and samba! I think part of the problem the box is trying to do too much stuff, how about a firmware with the basics (latest kernel, samba, power management, drive support, user management and folder management, and fast transfer speeds)?
