  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?

Manufacturer of the ISP modem, Arris, Motorola, etc are Mfrs.

Would like to establish that the ISP modem doesn't have any built in router or WiFi functions.

Does your household have any 5Ghz supporting devices? If not, one thing you can test with the 815s, turn OFF the 5Ghz radio.

There are some other good DIR series routers, just trying to establish your network needs before recommending something...I hoped to get your 815s going...

Wired or wireless when you game with it?
Beware of this on Slims:
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=50107.0

If you game using the Wired connection your good.

If you just need a general router, I would start with the DIR-636L, or DIR-655 or the DIR-645. The 645 is getting older and has already been thru development so I don't think there will be any other FW versions forthcoming unless there is a major security issue. The DIR-655 has just Rev'd so the most recent version is Rev C which i have and have tested. Good router and it's QoS engine is based off of the DIR-645s engine. The 645 is a great router too. I don't have the 636L however haven't seen a lot of issues with it the forum. All of the 6 series routers are 2.4Ghz WiFi only routers. 8 Series are both 2.4 and 5Ghz supporting routers.

Let us know if you have any more questions? What will you do with Dads 815?  ???

Let us know what you decide to go with. Let me know about the 815...I might be interested in it.  ;D

Also for any Xbox gaming, review this:

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

Placement in the house is key, central and on the main floor is best for good over all coverage.

Also looking at the User Manual, I just remembered that this model router doesn't have custom QoS features, just works automatically. This may not be good for Xbox gaming. I forgot that some lower end model routers don't have this ability. I believe the DIR-636L does. I'll have a look at the manual, I know the 645 and 655 do. We can help you get XBL set up and working well. I recommend LAN wire connecting the Slim to the router. The new router you get will probably not work well with the Slims on-board WiFi adapter. If you need to keep the Slim on a wireless connection to a router, you can install a DAP model Bridge on the Slim and connect the bridge to the main host router. Something like a DAP-1360, 1522, 1525 or 1533 will work well. I've used the 1533 on my xbox before for gaming on WiFi. Wired is best though.

Let me know about the 815, i'd like to test one out.  ;)

And to confirm, the 636L does have custom QoS features.
