Title: FTP - What's it for?

Forgive a newbie question  ::)

In a nutshell, what does the FTP option in the GUI accomplish, i.e., what is it used for ???

If you have a server on your network configured for remote (FTP) access, you can configure your camera to push images to the server.  This approach is used for long term or high volume image storage and can be used as an alternative to receiving images via email.

Adding to your webpage thread, if you standup an FTP server, a webpage can pull and display images from the server.

OK, I'm having issues setting up the server connection. I continue getting the message (after test) "Fail to change directory"  >:(
I think the "path" is incorrect. Can you advise what should go in there  ???

The Path field must contain the name of the directory your DCS will write to (e.g. test_folder).  In the case of a sub-directory, include the full path (e.g. test_folder/test_sub).  If you're just using the root, then simply try a forward slash (e.g. /)

"Stand up" is a technical term in IT referring to buying/building a server and adding it to a network. 

I'm not 100% sure what your goal is here.

If you are looking to dynamically display images that are streamed to your FTP server, then you'll need to install a gallery functionality on the website. If you simply want to access the image files remotely, then you should be able to login to the FTP server anywhere and download/view the images.

If you want to view the live streaming video, then you'll have to insert the HTML code I described in my earlier post.

FTP is another way to communicate with some Dlink IP cameras.

For instance, when I need to reboot my DCS-5300G remotely from the other side of the world, I can log into the camera via FTP and issue a "reset" command.  This can blow out any cobwebs causing connection problems!
