Title: DD-WRT and OpenWRT available for DIR-810L
Post by: murraydr44 on January 28, 2015, 08:08:53 PM
I made the mistake of flashing DD-WRT's beta firmware on the DIR-810L.   I tried it for a day; it was okay.  There was no way to flash back or proceed to openwrt firmware from the web menu.   I succeeded in getting openwrt's chaos calmer installed by removing 4 screws and attaching a 3.3v serial cable with pogo pins to the serial port in the corner.  The serial console command 'mtd erase linux ' was executed successfully, prompting a novel U-Boot prompt to ask for a firmware file.  TFTPD32 from http://tftpd32.jounin.net/ helped upload the openwrt firmware to the DIR-810L.  I have been enjoying chaos calmer on the DIR-810L for 4 days now.

There is actually pretty easy way to revert from DD-WRT - just hold the reset button for 30 seconds and you are in recovery mode, from where you can upload the stock image. Ofc the recovery mode does not provide DHCP, so you have to set your IP statically.
It is the same procedure with other D-Link routers, like DIR-615.

How did you manage to flash openWRT?
Is there an easy way that does not include making the USB port?
Can i just flash trough the web interfac, like DD-WRT?
Other peoples are saying that Wi-Fi is not working with openWRT, how did you manage to setup yours?

I recommend referring to the DD-WRT web site for help and information regarding WRT FW and processes.

OpenWRT wifi worked on the Jan.23 image for the DIR-810L, for the 2.4 GHz band only.  Jan.31 and Feb.02 firmware image of openwrt did not have working AP mode, only client mode.  From dd-wrt to openwrt, dd-wrt firmware upgrade menu won't accept the openwrt image, so the serial cable is needed.

They dont have a factory image provided. Factory images are used for flashing from stock firmware. There is only sysupgrade image (for upgrading from older version of openWRT), for whcih the only way to flash it over the stock is trough the serial port. I'm not aware for other methods of flashing sysupgrade images.

Just curious if this feature can be used to get OEM FW installed?  ???

Haven't tried it yet, but Luci web firmware page should have no restrictions for flashing back to OEM D-Link FW,  if I want AC750 Wifi restored.

Please check to see if that process works, if D-Links base boot loader is in tact, then maybe that can be used to install OEM FW back on to the router. Then go from there.

Let us now how it goes...

After flashing from OpenWrt to DIR810LA1_FW102B22.bin, default IP was 192.168.1.1, default password was not admin.  The top line of the D-Link start page includes: Hardware Version: A1     Firmware Version: 1.02

Did you use the Recovery process? default IP address should be .0.1 and blank for admin PW...

I left the 'save settings' box unchecked in the Luci firmware update menu.  If settings were saved, the router's IP would have been 192.168.81.1 .  The pppoe name and password also were filled in and working.

The box doesn't have to be opened to get OpenWrt installed.   Just install the dd-wrt  custom trailed firmware before flashing the openwrt upgrade image.  When Chaos Calmer enters beta, I'll try it again; it would be nice to retain AC750.

Just curious if you got it working again. Ya, you shouldn't have to open the case. Recovery mode can be used to put OEM FW back on I believe.

Good Luck

Stock D-Link firmware is on it now.  I'm waiting until Chaos Calmer is released with working 2.4GHz wifi for this model, at least.

CC1505RC3 (http://downloads.openwrt.org/chaos_calmer/15.05-rc3 (http://downloads.openwrt.org/chaos_calmer/15.05-rc3)/) is running well with wireless 2.4 ok on the DIR-810L.   QOS results are voice-grade. :)

luci-app-qos was set to 96% up/down, or 14400/9600Mbps on my 15/10 dsl connection.

Is there any chance of fq_codel with 3.10+ kernel showing up in a D-Link build for the DIR-810L?

Not much development going on anymore due to the age of the router. I presume that maybe if a security problem was found they would fix that. Other then that, maybe EOL.
I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.
Let us know how it goes please.

If you have trouble getting to the firmware recovery page when going from DD-WRT back to d-link firmware i have a solution.

Hardware: DIR-810L rev b
Problem: After doing 30/30/30 reset, can't connect to the firmware recovery page at 192.168.0.1 in any browser, router does not respond on ping at 192.168.0.1

Solution: Stock DD-WRT gives the router the ip: 192.168.1.1. Change it to 192.168.0.1 and reboot the router. Now perform the 30/30/30 reset (or do the fast reset ; see below). The firmware recovery page should be available at 192.168.0.1

Fast reset: when the router is turned on pull the power plug. Power plug still out press and hold down the reset button and plug in the power cable again. Release the reset button when the POWER LED starts flashing orange.

This should work as well:
