300 Mbps connection / ~8 Mbps wired and wireless
« on: January 23, 2017, 12:02:04 PM »

Hello,

Connection: Cox Cable 300 Mbps, Dynamic IP
Router: DIR-890L HW:A1 FW:1.10
Modem: Replacing with ARRIS SURFboard SB6183 (Thanks for the heads up on Puma 6 chipset in 6190 - it's terrible)
Switch: TP-Link Gigabit Rackmount
Region: USA
Factory Reset has been performed. Firmware was upgrade in an attempt to alleviate the problem.
PC Platform: GIGABYTE GA-Z87X-UD4H motherboard, Intel i217-V ethernet adapter.
QoS is not enabled.

Wired connection to modem shows speeds up to 260+ Mbps. No issue there.

Wired connection directly to router shows speeds between 2-8 Mbps. Wireless connection to router shows similar speeds. Connecting via switch also posts similar speeds.

AFAIK, we're using 5E or 6 patch cables. Lengths are under 50ft.

I have confirmed network adapters have gigabyte setting however this does not alleviate the issue. Does anyone have any other ideas?

Update 1: I hooked up my AP router (Asus NT-66U) and speeds are reaching upwards of 300 Mbps. The setup is exactly the same. The issue is most certainly with the Dlink router.

Link>Welcome!

  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?
  Link> >FW Update Process
  • Was the router working before any firmware updates?
  • Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

What PC platforms are you using?
What is the Mfr and model of the LAN adapters used in the PCs?
What wireless devices are you using?

Be sure that QoS is disabled if not being used. If being used, set the QoS UP and DownLink speeds for your ISP speeds you pay for.

Hi,

I’m having an identical problem as the OP.

Connection: Xfinity Cable 200 Mbps, Dynamic IP
Router: DIR-890L HW:A1 FW:1.09.B14
Modem: I have 2 modems - ARRIS 6190 & Netgear CM1000
Switch: D-Link DGS-1024D Gigabit
Region: USA
Factory Reset performed Firmware upgrade , downgraded, upgraded again, downgraded…
PC Platform: Asus Rampage V Extreme motherboard, Intel i218V Ethernet adapter.
QoS is not being used

History:

In November, I purchased the ARRIS 6190 to take advantage of my “free” Xfinity upgrade from 100 to 200Mbs connection.  Due to some lag and other oddities in my games, I shelved the 6190 and purchased the Netgear C1000.  I’ve had the DIR-890 since February 2016, and updated the firmware probably about 2 times.  Everything was fine with connection speed all the way to and after my 200Mbs upgrade.  I remember seeing 235Mbs down and 12Mbs up for at least a couple months.

At some point in mid-February, I accessed the DIR-890’s web interface to check on my internet connection, which happened to go out.  It was caused by Xfinity maintenance.  When it came back up, the router’s web interface announced a new firmware was available, so I followed the instructions, downloaded, and installed 1.10.  I think everything was OK, but this may have been the start of the issue.

Two weeks ago, I noticed my downloads were capping out at about 4MBs (normal was 15-20MBs), but since I wasn’t downloading much, I attributed it to a slow download server.  After 2 weeks of seeing this speed, I decided to run a speedtest, and was only getting 35M down, but the full 12M up.  After power cycling my CM1000, the speed plummeted to 3-5Mbs down, but still had 12Mbs up.

I disconnected my C1000 from the Router, and connected to my computer, I noticed I was still getting 3Mbs download speed, so called Xfinity support, and spent 2 painful hours with the clueless techs who performed a bunch of tests, power cycles, and provisioning.  The outcome was to call Netgear because the modem is screwed, and they aren’t allowed to access customer owned equipment.

I ended up calling back and having them provision my 6190.  This came up at full speed of 240Mbs down and 12Mbs up.  It was 3AM, so I called it a night.  In the morning, I connected the DIR-890, and WHAM – back down to 3Mbs/12Mbs.  Plugged back into the computer, and 230/12Mbs.  I’m not sure what happened to the Netgear C1000, but I’ll address that after I have it working with the 6190.

At this point I started realizing that maybe the firmware update screwed the DIR-890, so I downloaded 1.09.B14 and blasted it on, but it didn’t help.

Yesterday, I found this forum, and have followed all the “proper procedures” for FW updating: reset/apply update/reset/use wizard to put on fresh settings.  I’ve tried FW version 1.09B14, 1.10.B07, 1.11B01.  Nothing has helped.  I also tried to manually set MTU to 1500 (Xfinity’s recommended), change IPV6 settings from Auto to Local, perform a Router Recovery from corrupt Firmware using 1.09.

Any other suggestions?  Sorry for the story.  I just realized how long it was.

Thanks,
Mark

Link>Welcome!

  • What region are you located?

Is the test pc testing speeds wireless or wired to the router?
Do you have the ISP speed you pay for entered into the QoS section or left it at 300 for UP and Down?

Try a different LAN cable between the router and ISP Modem and PC? Be sure CAT 6 is used for best connections and performances.
Try a different PC if possible.
Be sure to disable any PC security SW and browser plugins.
Try IE11, FF and Opera to compare speeds.
Set the WAN port speed of the 890L from Auto to 1000mb.

Test with just the router and a wired PC with the ISP modem. Be sure that when your testing speeds that all other devices are either disabled or not using heavy bandwidth during testing. Wireless speed testing isn't recommended as it can produce inaccurate results.

I recommend using the CM1000 until Arris comes out with a release of FW for the 6190. Arris has acknowledged the problem and last information I saw, there working on the TCP issue and beta testing is looking good.

Just tested my 890L out:

Tested on a 5Ghz wireless Lenovo laptop with 120 and 4 set into QoS speeds. No devices set into QoS section.
Arris SB6183 on a 100/3 ISP service.

Hi FurryNutz,

Thank you for the quick reply.  I haven't been able to spend much time this week.  I have my setup on my old router at the moment, but will mess around with it on Sunday.

To answer some of your questions:

Test PC was wired when I tested speed.  I didn't check wireless speed, but will do so this weekend.

The same cable that gives me full speed (230/12Mbs - down/up) when I plug my computer directly into the router gives me 3/12mbs when plugged into the DIR-890.  I've also tried several different cables without resolve. I'm using all Cat6.

Try a different PC if possible.
I have several PCs connected wired, and tried a couple of them. - Main is running Windows 10 v1607 build 14393.693 - Home theater is Windows 7 latest updates, other 2 desktops are also W7.  I have a laptop that I can try as well.  All have gigabit NICs and are giving the same speed test.

I didn't disable PC security or browser plugins when updating the firmware, but will try this this weekend.

Try IE11, FF and Opera to compare speeds.
I generally use IE11 only, but have Chrome installed as well.  I'll install FF this weekend, and test speed using these other browsers.

Quote
Set the WAN port speed of the 890L from Auto to 1000mb.
I did not try manually setting the port speed to 1000Mbs, but will give it a shot.

As I said above, the issue is not present when the modem is plugged directly into the PC.  I get 230Mbs down and 12Mbs upload.  Only when I plug in the DIR-890 does the speed drop to 3Mbs down, but speed remains at 12Mbs upload.

I'll switch back to the C1000, but need to call Comcast support for that.  I'll give an update this weekend.

Thanks once again for your help!

Ok sounds good. Check all that out this weekend and let us know.

One last thing after you have tested this out, if your still not getting to spec speeds after test, I would try reloading FW code using the following process and see if the issue maybe resolved:
Emergency Recovery Mode
Set up from scratch and don't do any QoS configurations. Leave it at default.

One last try would be to take to a different location and test to see if the problem follows, say friend, neighbor or family. If it does then I would presume the unit needs to be RMAd.

D-Link is working on some other issues with the 890L FW and I presume will be coming out with a new FW update however not sure if or when it will be arriving. I hope we can get your figured out soonest though.

RESOLVED:

I was able to fix the issue.  Just for confirmation, I settled on Firmware V. 1.09B14 till the issues with 1.10+ are resolved.

I’ve discovered I can reproduce the behavior of this problem with a computer plugged directly into the modem.  I found if I swapped the modem cord from a computer running a speed test at 230Mbs download, to another computer without restarting the modem, I was getting this same 2-5Mbs download speed until a modem restart was performed, then full speed came back without a computer reboot.  It’s reproducible every time, and tried it with my Asus router with these results.

SO… I figured this may have something to do with restart order, and maybe time between device power-up.  I was able to get full speed from the connection with my DIR-890L by powering down EVERYTHING for a minute (unplugged modem, switch off on DIR-890L, turned off all computers).  First, I let the modem come back up with all lights stabilized, then let it sit for 2 minutes.  I then turned on the DIR-890 and let all lights come on and stabilize and sit 2 minutes.  Then I started a computer, performed a speed test, and got full speed.  At first, I tried the same procedure with 30 second pauses, and it didn’t work (same results 3-5Mbs download).

This never happened when I was using my DOC SIS 2 Surfboard SB6120 on the same service with the DIR-890. I wonder if there’s something about Xfinity/Comcast service using DOS SIS 3 modems that require the additional step of the 2 minute pauses when used with DIR-890L in my area.  My Asus router and computer didn’t care, they just came up and worked with only a modem restart.

I believe a firmware upgrade to the DIR-890L triggered the same reaction as plugging the modem into another device causing my woes.  Anyone else that trips across this problem can try that before RMA/replace.

Thanks for this information. I'll forward this on to D-Link for review. I have not seen this issue with my 890L and do get to spec speeds for what I pay for. However I don't have 300Mb service here. I've also tested the 890L on a SB 6121, 6180 and now 6183. My ISP service is still DOCSIS 3.0, nothing newer.

There is some issues seen with the current FW versions. I may go back to v1.09 and test again...

This might be an issue with the port speed auto-negotiation between the 890L and the Comcast modem, on the WAN link.

If you go toward the 890L configuration page "Settings > Network ", Please apply a manual "WAN Port Speed" of 1000 Mbps.

Only thing I've noticed that if I change routers back and forth, sometimes the routers wan port and the modems wan port doesn't seem to handshake normally until I power cycle the ISP modem, then the router gets the WAN IP address successfully.

I make it a habit to set manual WAN Port speeds on all of my routers to 1000Mb. Hope this might help this users out some.
