Why would you ever dream of running an open source windows network protocol from a Mac?

I never knew there was an alternative.
Thanks for the tip, will give it a go.

It seems to be an issue with the SMB protocol in Mountain Lion. Will talk with Apple tech support and advise what happens.
No problem with osx 10.8.1 and DNS-345. Transfer rate is about 45mb/s

Spoke with Apple. They reckon there are a few possible causes and the only way to fix it is for me to ring them when the issue occurs so they can troubleshoot it then (for some reason, in the morning it works fine and later in the day it doesn't). So I have to wait until it issue occurs during business hours and then call them...

Ok, so did some more playing around. Connected to the DNS-345 simultaneously in Finder via SMB and AFP.

SMB loaded nothing. AFP loads everything rapidly as one would expect.

This has remained like this for a good two hours now. Hopefully, that means my speed issue has been resolved by simply switching to AFP and ditching SMB.

Thanks, kave, for the tip!

Anvi, what type of hard drives do you have in your DNS? I notice my HDDs (Seagate 3TB disks) sounds like they're constantly powering-up and powering-down so I wonder if that is the cause of my speed issues...

Samsung Spinpoint F3s.

I'm using WD Red 2T drives and getting roughly 30 MB/S transfer rates.  Is that reasonable?

Seems to be around the maximum that DNS-345 can transfer at the moment..
