DIR 878 reaching 2400 mbps
« on: December 03, 2018, 09:09:43 AM »

Hey folks,
It's advertised everywhere that DIR 878 is a 3x3:3 router that can reach up to 600 mbps (2.4Ghz) and 1300 mbps (5Ghz), which is 1900 mbps total.
However, after setting it up, it looks like max speed on 5Ghz is 1733 mbps and 700 mbps on 2.4Ghz, thus reaching 2400 mbps total.

I found these numbers by using WiFi Analyzer and inSSIDER. Both tools report these numbers.

As far as I know, these numbers can be reached only if the router is 4x4:4. So I'm wondering whether or not this router is 4x4:4 instead of 3x3:3 as advertised.
I found elsewhere that DIR 878 has exactly same hardware as its sibling DIR 882, except that DIR 878 does not have USB feature.

That being said, if DIR 878's hardware is identical to DIR 882, then it's extremelly likely that  DIR 878 is a 4x4:4 router.

Can anyone confirm this information ?

Yes, that's been confirmed by Small Net Builder, and D-link, and the people who run the router Wiki.

The 878 and 882 both use the MediaTek MT7615N chipset which supports 4x4. D-Link does advertise 3x3 for the 878 but not sure if they locked it to 3x3 and the firmware unlocked it or it was always at 4x4 and you are the first to notice :)

I will email the project manager to verify.

These specs sound great !
Just in case 4x4:4 has been unlocked through firmware update, please do tell your manager to NOT ask development team to re-lock it to 3x3:3 again. :D
That's perfectly fine and I don't really want my DIR 878 to be downgraded to 3x3:3 lol :D

Just kidding !

That's a very good inquiry. I will google it and let you know about my findings.

Got confirmation. The router is 4x4:4 so no worries about future firmware locking it to 3x3.  Only difference between the 878 and 882 is the USB port.
