I have been having an issue with my Ipad Air 2's wifi connection. I use a 5Ghz connection to a DIR-868L (HW version A1 running firmware 1.09). I'd be playing a game of world of tanks and every so often tanks would start teleporting (packet loss indicator) or my ping would skyrocket to 1000ms.
I came to the conclusion it was something to do with the wifi connection and when I looked at the signal using wifi analyser I could see that my 5Ghz SSID was dropping to zero strength every so often. ie Looks like the 5GHz transmission was stopping and then restarting.

After much playing around and trial and error (wifi analyser is a great free program!) I determined that the issue seems to be related to the SSID visibility. If I have the SSID invisible I get dropouts. If I make it visible I have stable performance.
Obviously this is a bug - for security reasons I would prefer it to be invisible and I can't think why making it invisible would cause intermittent wifi restarts but from testing this seems to be the case. Also note there are no competing 5Ghz wifi access points in my neighbourhood - clear spectrum, so its not interference.

Hidden SSID cause more problems then it helps. It is not really a security feature at all. See here and here on why.

"...the wireless driver must send the probe packet to the AP for the hidden SSID. We have seen that power settings defined on the NIC driver can influence whether the AP receives this probe."

Also, just because you can't see other 5Ghz network, doesn't mean they aren't there. They too might be hiding their SSID, which makes channel management near impossible. Hidden SSID died out when security got better with AES, and kind of like MAC filtering, just lead to a false sense of security which can cause you problems, as well as problems for others around you.

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under the router case.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

This model router is nearing EOL for development so I don't think, even if this is a real issue that is reproducible with D-Link, that they are going to fix it. I would recommend following what Harry mentioned and avoid using the hidden feature for wireless.

SSID visibility causes more headaches than it solves. It simply adds more unnecessary admin work especially when you have guests come over. MAC filtering causes even more headaches than it solves especially if you plan on adding lots of wireless devices like wireless extenders and connected home products. Using WPA2 with AES with a strong passphrase is the gold standard for home networks.

On my just installed 868L B1 FW 2.0.3, I experience the same problems with connection drops after setting WiFi to Invisible, on my Time Capsule (and  UBEE Cable modem) I never had problems with hidden networks.

Does the router work correctly if you don't use Hidden?
