Dynamic DNS not working
« on: November 02, 2014, 08:44:38 AM »

My DIR-615 HW E4 Firmware 5.13 continues to shows ‘Disconnected’ in DDNS.
I have opted for the free Dlinkddns.com account and my device was registered and verified well in time as per the requirement.
If I correctly remember it used to work well before.

Interestingly, if I access my hostname on dlinkddns.com and manually update the IP, then thereafter  DIR615 web interface shows ‘Connected’. However it seems router on its own is not properly connecting to Dynamic DNS despite the option is enabled and correct credentials are entered.

Also I notice that when I access the DDNS in router web interface (URL is http://192.168.0.1/tools_ddns.asp  ) this page takes quite a few seconds to load unlike other pages that load quite quickly. Eventually it shows status as ‘Disconnected’ and DNS is not updated. Ping returns earlier IP only. Any inputs to troubleshoot would be great.

Maybe the data is some how disconnecting and the router is not auto rec-connecting to the service...Maybe depending on your ISP modem and ISP Services as well.

I have had a similar problem with my D-Link router/firewall (not sure of model or firmware version).   I need DNS services so I can remotely manage my camera and thermostat.   All of this is at a cabin in the mountains that I visit infrequently - most of the time I go there, there has been a power outage since my last visit.

Every so often, the equipment becomes unreachable because the IP address registered at dlinkddns is wrong (presumably stale).

When I have looked into the issue, I have found that that the check box on the router for enabling DDNS has been un-checked.   I think this is related to the power outages and I have two theories:
  • There is a bug in the router firmware that occasionally disables DDNS during a reboot after a power outage.
  • Some sort of error occurs with DDNS during a reboot and the router itself clears the DDNS setting due to the error.  (seems like a really bad design to me.)

Has anyone else had a similar issue?

I am thinking it is a bug in the router (that won't get fixed) and I just need to by a new router.   I'll assume a newer D-Link might have inherited the same bug, so I'll have to buy another brand.

Location: US
ISP: cable modem on SuddenLink service

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under the router case.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • Has a Factory Reset been performed?
  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?
>FW Update Process

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?

I recommend that you have your ISP check the cabling going to the ISP modem, check signal levels going to the ISP modem. For DSL or Fiber service lines, ensure that the ISP is using good working phone or cable lines to the DSL modem and that the phone lines are filtered correctly. For cable Internet, RG-6 coaxial cable is needed, not RG-59. Check for t.v. line splitters and remove them as they can introduce noise on the line and lower the signal going to the ISP modem. I recommend having the ISP service physically check the lines going from the out side to the ISP modem. Connecting to the ISP modem could result in a false positive as the signal to the modem could be just enough to that point then adding on a router, could see problems. The router operation is dependent upon getting good data flow from the ISP modem and the modem is dependent upon getting good signal from the ISP Service.

Yes, I believe the 615 is headed to Phased Out status and may not longer see any more FW updates. We havn't seen many issues with newer generation DIR series model routers.

In my case  now I find that when I downgraded the firmware from v5.13 to older 5.10,  DDNS function seems to be working as expected.
So may be it could have been a bug that got introduced in later versions (just a guess though).

I decided to downgrade firmware just as a try-out.    As such there have been just a few instances where I needed to use this feature earlier and I guess then it was on original firmware that came with the router.

In my region http://dlink.co.in/ DIR 615 is already phased out. No longer available under 'Product Finder' option. However I could get the older firmware from  http://tsd.dlink.com.tw/

Glad you found a work around for the DDNS. Ya, the 615 is now getting older and probably not developed on any more. Rev I for the NA region was the last Rev and last FW version released was last year. If the older FW version works then you should be ok. I recommend eventually, getting into a newer version of a DIR series router. I presume the DDNS isn't an issue with newer generation routers.

Enjoy.
