why is my wan cable droping and comming back up all the time??

i have 3 pc's in lan ports 1 2 and 3
port 1 has my pc (running vista on a gigabit port, approx 2M cable length, cat5e)
port 2 has my missus pc (runing vista and a gigabit port, approx 2M cable lenth, cat5e)
port 3 has the office pc (running xp home on a 100mb port (approx 20M cable lenth, cat5e)
port 4 is empty
wan port is plugged into my NTL 250 modem via a 1.5M cat5e  cable)
5ghz band is turned off at preset and has been turned off for several months
2.4ghz band occationaly has a windows 7 laptop connected
im running the standard 1.12EU firmware and im on A2 hardware
on the router config page when i click check for firmware updates it says im running the latest (which i know is wrong as the latest is 1.23EU??)

i have a 160gb ide external hard drive plugged into the shareport which worked fine for a few weeks up untill last week when occationaly had my router will go crazy and "reset its self" screen comes on and shows the D-Link sign runs through its usual start up procedure and it wipes the log file.
this is the first time ive notived these "disconnect/connect" notices today

any idea's on what to do? or whast causing it?? im going to unplug the hard drive from the shareport and see if that changes anything. durring these "disconnected and connected" spaz's the ethernet light on my ntl 250 model stays on and never goes out??

i came offline at about 2am this morning and shut all computers and laptops down...... checked router log this morning and i had the disconnection and re-connection of the wan port at 4am (ish)
all computers were off so i dont think its related to them. my wireless is secured and there is no signs of anyone using it (no requests to join or anything) so i dont think its being hacked into either.

one think i am wondering..... virgin media upgraded my cable from the street cab (green distribution cab in the road) to my house. because i was getting poor signal. so they upgraded to a better cable with less signal loss. looking at the modem settings i am getting a stronger signal from virgin media
however this was about the same time that i started experiencing these wan drops.

has anyone had problems with certain modems having compatability issues with the dir855??
in theory any modem will work fine. im wondering about reporting these wan connection drops to virgin and requesting a new modem however the modem logs reveal nothing of use, it doesnt even log the fact i unplugged its ethernet cable but my router did.

interestingly if i unplug the modem-router cable i get exactly the same log results (wan cable disconnected wan cable connected) as when i dont touch the cable but it things its been unplugged

Have you verified that your Ethernet port on the Modem is functioning properly? The modem may have issues. Try plugging the router WAN port into another device to see how long the link stays up. As it's not a connection drop, but a Cable unplugged error, it doesn't matter what device you plug into, as long as the the WAN port can negotiate with the device it's plugged into, this experiment should work.
I had to do this myself with the DSL modem I had, turned out the device was faulty because of the power bar it was plugged into.

ill give that a go, pluggin the WAN/INTERNET port of the 855 directly into my pc shoud work provided i leave my pc on??
yesterday i unplugged my usb hard drive from the shareport but i still got the disconnect/connect problems so i dont think its the shareport either so i plugged that back in and so far the connection from moden/router has been up and running for 1day 6hours and 16mins with the hard driev plugged into the shareport and used occationaly, so ill leave it untill it drops out again (if it does) and then test to see if its the modem at fault or not.
virgin media have upgraded my line so im wondering if its anything to do with that on virgin media's side of things, ive had this dir-855 for about 6 months so far and its been faultless up untill now.
my dir-866 and my ntl250 modem are plugged into the same powerbar along with my pc and monitor.

any idea what was causing the "reboots"?? no warning at all it just reboots its self and the log file is empty as it has cleared its self aswell but all the settings are as i set them so its not reverting back to defaults either.
im not sure if the reboots and WAN unplugged errors are related or not, the reboots started about a week ago and the cable unplugs started a couple of days ago. its possible the cable unplugs started a week ago aswell but i didnt notice them as the log file was cleaned by the reboots.

there is nothing in the modem logs at all about the cable being unplugged. the last entry is the modem log file is from the last time it was rebooted (about a week ago due to virgin media cable upgrade) and is just confirming that the modem file matches virgin media's file (for authentification)

at present my dir855 connections are:
wan port: modem
lan port 1: pc
lan port 2: pc
lan port 3: pc
lan port 4: empty
share port: hard drive
2.4ghz: laptop

if i change this round to the following:
wan port: empty
lan port 1: modem
lan port 2: pc
lan port 3: pc
lan port 4: pc
share port: hard drive
2.4ghz: laptop

will all pc's and wireless devices still be able to access internet??

that was if the modem's ethernet port is faulty i should get a lan port (lan port 1)disconnect and NOT wan port disconnect, im only asking because i cant really go without internet on all pc's for a few days while i verify if the modems ethernet port is working

ok guys might have found the problem, when virgin media upgraded my line they broke some clips and wires so my landline has been down ever since they upgraded my line about a week ago. they came round to fix it and so far no WAN disconnect/connect errors so fingers crossed.
