can't read from the source file or disk
« on: July 31, 2011, 08:50:45 PM »

i did a clean install of windows 7 and all of a sudden i am having a hard time transferring video files to the dns 323.  every time i try to transfer from an internal drive of my computer to the nas i get this error message:

"can't read from the source file or disk"

i have already mapped the drive (z) to my computer so why it has all of a sudden stopped working is a mystery to me.

please help!

The error message indicates there is a problem with your windows installation and/or your local hard drive. The nas probably works just fine.

i have tried transferring files from 3 different computers to the NAS.  all have the same problem.  all the computers have different operating systems.

i'm sure it's something simple or stupid that will take a few seconds to fix...just don't know what it is!

Can you see/transfer files located on the NAS to any of your PCs?

Ι've told you right from the very first moment, stop thinking about the nas and start thinking about what is wrong with your other hardware. It is about time to visit other forums, too.

Go into the DNS-323 web interface and open the "Status" tab.  What does the page display for each drive?

it shows 2 drives in status and it shows the right capacity and drive info...just to clarify, hopefully the hard drive in question is on my computer, not in the nas.  if it's the hard drive in the nas, that's even worse.

I agree with the other poster indicating that this issue may reside in your PC. The one thing that throws me for a loop is that (If I read your prior posts correctly) you stated that you are unable to access your NAS from three different PCs.

I was a bit unclear about an earlier response you wrote.  Just to sum things up (please validate or correct):

1. You can transfer files between/within the hard disks in any three of your three PCs
2. You are unable to transfer files to/from the DNS-323
3. You can open/read files on the DNS-323

If this is the case, this is starting to look like a permission issue within the DNS-323.

thanks javalawyer,

1. i can NOT transfer out of the 1 internal hard drive, i can NOT even copy to another folder within the hard drive

2. i can access all files within the internal hard drive (just got off the phone with hitachi technical support-they said the hard drive is NOT corrupted because i can access the drive contents-if corrupted i would get nothing)

the hitachi tech rep thinks it's a permission issue that was caused by a clean install of windows 7 on drive #1 ssd for the operating system.  the previous windows had attributes to the files that the next version of windows will not allow to be transferred to another drive for protection.

again, i can still write to the drive, open the contents of the drive, but cannot transfer the contents of the drive anywhere.

please help!
