Title: File not accessable
Post by: Rodent on December 09, 2007, 01:56:36 PM
Hi,

I have a problem with a file that I copied to my DNS-323, I copied a file named MapDrive.vbs to the root of one of the shares I created, and everything was find until I restarted the DNS-323 now I can not see the file...So I thought that I had deleted the file by mistake (NOT) so I tried to copy the file again to the same place but I get an error from Windows XP saying that the file can not be copied because the file already exists...
I also can not see the file through another share one level above the shared folder in question.

I am not sure what I can do about this file I can no longer see, have other files gone missing, so far this is the only file I have come across but I have not gone through 400 GB of data to see.

Is there another way to look at the files on the DNS-323, I am going to try FTP to locate and delete this file, maybe D-Link could add some function to the web interface kind of like a file manager with the ability to delete?

Will any i dears

What firmware version is on your DNS-323?

What firmware version is on your DNS-323?

Firmware Version 1.03

I have also moved all the files under this share to another folder and tried to delete the share, I get an error message that says 'cannot remove folder Storage: The directory is not empty'.

The only way I can see to fix this is to copy all of the content of the DNS-323 to another storage media and reformat....... :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

I have a similiar issue.  But it is folders.  Around 10 of them have disappeared and everytime we try to recopy it says 'Folder already exsists'.  Also what is happening the viewable folders are doubled up.  If you save a file in one it shows up in another.  We tried copying to a new folder and it did the same thing.  It is happening in multiple folders.

Have you formatted the drives since updating the firmware to 1.03? If not you may want to try reformatting the drives and see if you run into this issue again.

My DNS-323 come with firmware 1.03 and I put two brand new WD 500GB SATAII drives into it, set the drives up as RAID 1 so I have a single volume_1. This device is about three weeks old.

The other thing I have noticed is the reported space usage, If I select properties of everything in the root of volume_1 I get 166 GB but if I look at the usage in the DNS-323 web interface I get 55 GB whats with that ???

Thanks

Can you provide the drive information for us? Model #, Revision etc. When you originally created your folders, did you create it through FTP or through the Network Share? Are these folders accessible through FTP and not network share in windows?

Hi,

Drive Information
2 x WD Caviar KS 500GB SATAII (I will have to get the rest of the information tonight when I get home from work).

I setup the DNS-323 as follows:

Unpacked and installed HDD's, plugged into network and turned on, went to my Windows XP computer and it discovered a new uPnP device click on it and was taken to the web interface of the DNS-323, logged in and configured as RAID 1. Waited................................. ;D

Logged into the web interface after format completed and looked around and configure the options like WORKGROUP, NAME, DESCRIPTION, I also setup a GROUP and USER.

Than I went to My Network Places and created two folders, one STARAGE is for general and family data and one PRIVATE$ that is for my private data (the $ sign is to make the share hidden).

Than back to the web interface and setup NETWORK ACCESS as follows:

Volume_1        Volume_1        Private     Root access for Rodney
Storage         Volume_1/Storage     ALL
Private$         Volume_1/Private$     Private     Private Area for Rodney

Now back to Windows XP and start copying data.

All data and folders are accessible via share in windows and FTP and to date I have only lost one file that I placed into the root of the STORAGE share called (MAPDRIVE.VBS) that I use to map the PRIVATE$ share as I am having problems with the Windows XP connect to dialog box graying out the user name field as mentioned in another post....I have copied this file to a folder (Map Drive) under STORAGE but I have not restarted the DNS-323 to find out if it disappears again......YET

Hope this is not to confusing and you can follow, If you need more information just let me know.

Thanks
Rodney

Followed you perfectly. If you don't have the FTP server setup on the device you may try setting that up with access to the Root drive and try to locate the vb script file that way. If you can find it via ftp try to delete it and recopy it using network sharing to both your public and private share. Reboot and see if it is gone from both...one...or not gone at all. If it disappears again try to delete it again via FTP and then RE-Upload it using ftp to those folders this time. Verify you can see it via network share and reboot once more. Is it gone again?

In the second post you will see that I have tried to find the file with FTP and could not see it, I have not tried to copy it with FTP so I will give that a go.

I am planning this week end to do some testing:
1. copy all the files I don't have else where off for backup.
2. restart the DNS-323 and see if the same file that I have in a different folder disappears.
3. copy some other vbs file to the DNS-323 and restart, see what happens.
4. shutdown DNS-323 and remove one drive, restart to see what I can see.
5. shutdown again and replace one drive and remove the other, again see what I can see.
6. If I cannot find the file I will reformat the disks and not copy vbs files to it ???

Anyone have any other ideas I can try?

Thanks
Rodney

Here is a technical question:

If I am running the DNS-323 with two HDD's (let say HDD1 on left as you look at the power button and HDD2) in RAID 1 mode and I take HDD2 out, I should see all my files on HDD1 YES. (I do  ;D) and if I replace HDD1 with HDD2 I should still see all my file YES. (I do NOT)

I don't have the shares I created.
The browse button in Network Access is grayed out.
The set RAID type and reformat button in RAID is grayed out so I can't reformat that drive.

So is the drive dead, I have all the email alerts turned on but only get space status emails, the front panel light is on blue so what is going on ???

So my actual question is should I see the same thing on both drives if I place them in one at a time?

Thanks

I just checked my email and found three that say HDD failure, I did not get any of these email with both HDD's in the DNS-323 but only when I removed the ok HDD and only had the failed HDD in the device did it send me the emails.

also I am guessing that the email would have been the same if I had both disks in the device so could a bit more information about which disk failed would be nice.

Since I have removed the failed HDD I am now not getting any email alerts from the DNS-323.

I have the DNS-323 setup for all email alerts but now that only one drive in the RAID 1 is in the device I don't get any emails not evan space status emails.

I do get the test message email when I click the test email button.

This is strange:

Volume Name:    Volume_1
Volume Type:    RAID 1
Sync Time Remaining:    103.3 minute(s)
Total Hard Drive Capacity:    490402 MB
Used Space:    2199023 MB
Unused Space:    492586 MB

Whats the story here!

If have replaced the failed HDD with another drive, it re-synced and all worked ok but for the space information and I still have the file that I cannot see.
So I have re-formatted as RAID 1 and so far so good.

I will post in this post if I lose any files again.

Thanks for all the replies  ;D keep up the good work...
