Best option for non-myDlink web viewing?
« on: January 04, 2013, 03:21:49 AM »

Mydlink etc all works fine, but because the mydlink website java tool requires certain non-standard ports to access the video, I can't access the camera at work as I'd like.

So I've installed iSpy and the camera is working fine, having port forwarded port 80 on my home's static IP address via my router.

Under iSpy there are a variety of different options apparently available for hooking onto the live feed.  The iSpy website lists the following as possible options:-
Code: [Select]
DCS-930L JPEG http://IPADDRESS/IMAGE.JPG
DCS-930L JPEG http://IPADDRESS/Image.jpg
DCS-930L JPEG http://IPADDRESS/image/jpeg.cgi
DCS-930L JPEG http://IPADDRESS/_gCVimage.jpg
DCS-930L MJPEG http://IPADDRESS/video/mjpg.cgi
DCS-930L MJPEG http://IPADDRESS/video.cgi
DCS-930L MJPEG http://IPADDRESS/VIDEO.CGI
DCS-930L MJPEG http://IPADDRESS/MJPEG.CGI
DCS-930L MJPEG http://IPADDRESS/mjpeg.cgi
DCS-930L MJPEG http://IPADDRESS/?camid=[CHANNEL]
DCS-930L MJPEG http://IPADDRESS/mjpeg.cgi?user=[USERNAME]&password=[PASSWORD]&channel=[CHANNEL]
DCS-930L MJPEG http://IPADDRESS/video.cgi?resolution=VGA
DCS-930L VLC rtsp://IPADDRESS:554/
DCS-930L VLC rtsp://IPADDRESS:554/play1.sdp
DCS-930L VLC rtsp://IPADDRESS/

I've noticed that the rtsp doesn't work, not a surprise.  Any pointers to the "best" option from there.  I've successfully used both the video.cgi and the mjpeg.cgi option, without any noticeable difference.

It seems to be serving 640x480 video fine (contradicting what the FAQ says about the maximum resolution over the web), though at about 1.2FPS only.  Reducing the video output on the camera to 160x120 improves the frame rate to about 7-8FPS.  Is that about "right" for the speed of a feed over ADSL?

So far, very happy with the camera - easy to set up, very accessible etc.

Just posting a theoretical answer to the last bit of my post.

I captured one of the frames at 160x120 and it had a size of 5.54KB (kilobytes).

So 7 of them per second would be a data transfer of about 39 kilobytes per second.  If I've got things right, that's then about 304 kilobits per second, which is 0.3Mbps?  I think my ADSL2+ broadband is currently synced at around 0.4Mbps, so that would suggest that the upload speed is the bottle neck.

Does that make sense?

Thanks, yes that's where I got the link to iSpy from.  I was wondering more whether there was any difference in the various settings used to extract the video - i.e. were any of the various .cgi extensions which iSpy suggested for connecting to the camera better than any others.

From a bit of trial and error, it seems they are all effectively the same, so I suppose that is the answer in the end.

Cheers!
