Firmware update - wont boot
« on: April 26, 2015, 01:28:27 PM »

attempted to update the firmware on my router through automatic update in web interface. The firmware downloaded, updated and said it was successful. The router rebooted and now will not boot. The power light is slowly flasing am amber color. Firmware was on original version and attempted to update to the latest version. I have tried power down for 5 minutes as well as hitting reset button for 10 seconds, but problem persists. Cannot access router through web. Any idea on how to restore?

Link>Welcome!

  • What region are you located?

What browser were you using to update the router?
Do you have any 3rd party PC security SW installed and enabled during this process? If so what Mfr is the SW?

Please download the resent FW security update patch from here:
http://securityadvisories.dlink.com/security/publication.aspx?name=SAP10054

Then using IE or FF with any browser add-ons and PC security disabled, follow this to see if you can get the FW file loaded and get the router to reboot correctly:
Emergency Recovery Mode

We recommend using the following when doing ANY FW updates for future reference:
FW Update Process

The solution worked. I will say that for the average Joe, the solution, as written, would be next to impossible to follow/complete. DLINK should consider creating a document that better outlines, in greater detail, the steps necessary to complete the emergency recover process. In addition, there are forum references to turning off anti-virus software, etc, however when choosing the automatic firmware update option through the browser interface, which is how I image most people will update, it makes no reference to any of this. I highly encourage making those suggestions at that time. Just food for thought.

Thanks for all the help.

Not sure how to write that better. it's generally straight forward in steps in what needs to be done. Any it sounds like those steps worked for you.  ;) You shouldn't need the recovery mode again as all as you follow the FW update process steps.  ::)

Yes updating via router is supported, however different things can impact the router upgrade. i.e. ISP services and line quality as well could effect successful upgrade thru the router. So using the FW Update Process is preferred here in the forums. And it has all the steps and information for a good and successful upgrade.

Glad you got it working. Enjoy.  ;)
