Title: "Repeat" using the 2.4ghz or 5ghz band?
Post by: Lynster on October 16, 2019, 11:09:58 AM
I just started streaming video to our TV recently using ROKU* Ultra and trying to optimize the signal strength presented to the ROKU device. It's a dual-band device and I've currently got it setup to use the 5ghz band.
My DAP-1650 is the dual-band WiFi repeater located closest to the TV, clear line of site (LOS) and about 20ft away. The ROKU has a menu item (hidden) that allows you to display signal strength. I'm suspicious that I'm not getting the signal strength (SS) I should for clear LOS. If I turn the DAP-1650 off, the SS drops to zero, so I know I'm connected to that device. I've got some ideas for tweaking the SS between the DAP-1650 and the ROKU.
All the above was a prelude to my questions.
My main router is a D-Link DIR-890L/R AC3200 Dual-band Ultra WiFi router. As mentioned above, the Repeater is the D-Link DAP-1650.
Several questions:
* Since both WiFi devices are dual-band, how does the DAP-1650 connect with the DIR-890L?
   * via the 2.4ghz band, or,
   * via the 5ghz band, or,
   * BOTH bands?
* If the DAP-1650 only connects via 1 of the bands, does it then convert the incoming signal to produce the other band?
* Can you control or select which band the DAP-1650 uses to connect to the main router?

This might sound like silly questions to some, but just  trying to understand the inter-connection scheme between the 2 devices.

Thanks in advance...

I would try the DAP at a farther distance. 20 feet is too close. I would try starting at 30 feet between the DIR and DAP.
Is Smart Connect enabled on the DIR? If so, i would disable SC. I don't know for sure if this model DAP supported SC.
DAPs i've used prior to this model only supported 1 band at a time thus you had to select which SSID to use and it would just just the one it connected to.

I believe if you connect the DAP to a 5Ghz SSID then it will reproduce the same frequency and SSID name.
